stupid piston ring question:

i've never used one-piece oil rings (i know, i should be using three piece, but it's what i have). My question is: does the spring ring go behind it with the gap opposite the gap in the ring? I managed to get the cylinders over them, but they sure seem a tight fit. end gap measures at .007 in the cylinders, which i believe should be just about dead on (.003 gap per inch of bore, right?).

i just wanted to make sure that the gap in the spring shouldn't line up with the gap in the ring itself. i installed it this way, and the pistons seem to travel up and down the cylinders appropriately.

thanks- bought some rings from rusty riders and didn't realize the oil rings were one piece until i got them. the picture was for three piece oil rings.

Paul,

If you complain to them about it, they will offer you a (partial) rebate, same thing happened to me as well.  They changed the picture on the 750 ring to the 1 piece picture after I complained.

yea,me neither,my harley rings didnt have a springy thing.

well now you guys are worrying me. it was a really tight squeeze for sure, but the pistons travel pretty freely in the bores turning the stator by hand.

mkramer- you used the exact same rings? did you find it difficult to get the pistons in the bores at the oil ring? granted, i used my fingers rather than a ring compressor, but damn it wasn't easy. me like three piece oil rings.  >:(

i will say i like the idea of a spring behind the oil ring,should help keep it from sticking,like mine did.

It was my first rebuild, so whatever was difficult, etc., I don't have a baseline to compare it to...I used my fingers too.

It was my first rebuild, so whatever was difficult, etc., I don't have a baseline to compare it to...I used my fingers too. 

well it's funny, 'cause i only have modern three piece rings to compare to. showing my age i guess.
