Getting out a kick start gear pin.
« on: February 12, 2008, 07:57:36 PM »
Hey,

I've tried blow torches, cans and cans of wd and even a vice but can not manage to get the pin out that secures the kickstarters gear and pinion locked into the lower crank case.

It's driving me mad as it's the last step (I know they are all last steps till finished) before a I can clean up the engine cases and start building again.
I'm just about to throw into the oven as mentioned before on this site but worried about warping the gear and springs.

Help anyone?

Cheers
Michael

Mike, I left the pin and mechanism in. I think the parts will take the low heat for baking the paint - if thats what you are talking about.

If I did want to take it out I'd use my diagonal cutting piers - squeeze down at the base of the pin like you were going to cut it off flush (but don't cut it off :D), then push down on the handles,  lever it up and inch it out.

EDIT

Just for fun I gave it a try and it came right on out:

I also had problems with this, I think I used a set of Mole grips (vice grips) and a hammer.  I tried it on a spare crankcase first as I was also afraid of breaking something, but it actually came out quite easily when I whacked it! I think it was a roll pin, so obvoiusly it needs to be compressed to close the gap if orientation allows.

if it is a roll pin, then generally they are a one way deal....
designed to go in one way and out one way. one end is tapered to go in and compress the pin as it is pushed in, this end will flare out and pretty much lock the pin in place if you beat on it with a punch
one end will be square ended (like pipe is) this is the end you hit with a punch, and the other end tapered (like and old fashioned apple corer) dont hit this end
hope this helps
cheers
