Spikey,

Sorry for your loss!  The workmanship on your bike was amazing.  When I saw the pictures I felt sick to my stomach.  I know you'll rebuild the bike but that doesn't can't ease the pain now.

Best Wishes!

I am joining the party late on this one (no offence intended re: the party comment!) as I am just seeing this now...

Damn that sucks! Times like these require a glass is half full approach! This could have been a hell of a lot worse! I don't care what bike was torched (yes even a 736cc fully restored Sandcast!!) they are nothing compared to what could have happened. Thank god the tank was off the bike and judging by your fab skills I am guessing there was likely O2 and acetylene kicking aorund too!  :o   :o

i have been waiting for chance to tell this story on the forum....

about 7 years ago i was working at this dinky little fab shop, i think 6 employees .
i was working at my station , cutting up scrap plate with an oxy-torch. the guy at the station next to mine was doing the same thing
it was a manifold system (several torches on one set of tanks) anyway through the course of cutting plate this numbnuts cuts the chain that is holding the acetylene tank up, .....you guessed it this story is about to get good..
the tank falls head first into the corner of my table and the regulator pops off into the spray of sparks from me cutting ,
not a huge explotion as you my think , about as loud as a small pistol going off .. that tank turned into a ROCKET , pointed right at me.
i had a helmet on  so i didn't see what happened , i lifted my helmet just in time to see the tank coming at me at a million miles an hour, and it's only 2 or 3 feet away .
i jumped in the air, the tank clips my foot spinning me a full 360 degrees in the air (sprained ankle). the tank rockets through the building (through the wall that is) flyes across a busy street, a couple cars slam on the brakes in time to watch it rocket by with a 6 foot flame out the back. then goes through the corner of someones house (no injuries there) and into there pond....

no joke , i swear that happend.. anyway the point of the story is thats why i don't have tanks in my garage

You were lucky Spiker, my old shop teacher told me a similar story about when he worked at the BMW factory in Germany in the 1950's, only the bottle rammed a worker up into the roof of the factory, and pushed his remains thru the hole it made! Needless to say, they all had a couple of days off.................  :P
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Wow what a rocket that musta been.  Hella loud too I imagine.

I once worked as a goldsmith and we soldered together hollow gold and platinum balls for some pendants.  One day the designer asked for a platinum ball with only one hole (they usually had two).  Well there must have been a lot of flux inside the ball which was being soldered together and it ignited, shooting out the single hole.

It sounded like a starter pistol.

The 3/4 inch ball shot through the length of the workspace where 5 of us were, and put a 1/2 in dent in a steel fire door which it hit.  As this ball was about 1000 degrees or so, it would have gone right through someone cauderizing the wound on the way through.

yeah i thought i was pretty lucky,

the end of that story is'
i find out how it all happened, and i walk up to my co-worker screaming at him (lots of colorful words) .  he starts to tell me how the lighting is bad and he couldn't tell what he was cutting
.......................................... "THEN STOP FU*CKING CUTTING" then i smell the booze on his breath.
(keep in mind ,as you just stated, i could've been killed)

brother, i f**king lost it ... ended up (very short) a fist fight. and me getting 2 months paid vacation. and of course he got fired. OSHA got involved ...the whole nine. ..........it was a busy week  ::)

Well I'm glad that you're still here to tell the tale. In the early days of my Army "career", we were allowed to drink booze at lunchtime. I worked in a Signal Corps "tech workshop" where we made prefab "Commcentres".

Quite often someone would grind his knuckles off, or chop off a pinky in the bandsaw, or ramset his foot to the floor. We got a new Commanding Officer and he banned the booze, and surprisingly, the workplace injuries all but disappeared. Amazing! ;D

Nothing related to shooting things or fire... but here goes.

The first industrial accident I saw involved a busy shop, a accountant, and a 25HP radial arm drill press.
I was working as a machinists trainee at this shop in layton, UT.
The drill press was a OLD bugger, and I was warned from day one, don't get caught in a chip, the brake does not work.

So after being there for about 3 weeks, we are SWAMPED with work, so some of the office staff came out to run a few machines(many of the were machinists before office personell).

One late 40's gentleman was being instructed on how to safely drill these 4 1/2 holes, then ream them.(pivot bore for a tilting extension boom)

Well, the first half of the day, not too bad.
I watche4d him for a while, and noticed he was wearing gloves, and even brushing chips away (while drilling) from the hole.
I told him that wearing gloves was a bad thing on a drill press, and how to break the chips so they do not get too long.

He did listen on how to break chips, but continued to wipe away the chips by hand(mind you this was a 4 7/16 drill bit going through 12" square tube with 1" thick walls.)

After lunch, the first thing after the buzzer we heard was a BLOOD curdling yell from over by the drill press.

By the time anyone was near enough to help, the drill had come to a stop, his arm was twisted around the drill bit almost 2 full revolutions.

Every time they hit the drill with a drill drift he would scream and turn white as a ghost.
The paramedics then cut the chips in pieces, and unwound his arm off the drill bit.
The blood... ughhh. I almost puked.
The bones that were poking out at horrid angles, i cannot describe the feeling just seeing such an injury.

He did come back however.
He was the person to fill the "saftey inspector" position they made just for him.
He was out for 7 weeks, and the x-rays showed 12 (14?) breaks from fingers to every major bone in the arm.
His leg was sore as well....
They had to do skin grafts from his butt, to his knee to help his arm.

Have seen fingers lopped off in large key seating machines, among other minor injuries.
I pray I remember them all, so i never have an industrial accident....

Listening to a guy who has advice for you and is missing one or less fingers, thats not crazy.
Listening to the advice from the guy who lost two(or more) fingers/limbs, to two separate incidents doing the same thing.... thats crazy.
And yes, I have met someone missing 2 fingers. Both accidents stemming from the same problem.
He snipped the first off accidentally, while trying to set the first stroke, had his hand in the wrong area, got distracted, and WHOP, lost a finger.
The second time he said he was DEMONSTRATING how it happened, and he must have not realized a cutter was in the keyseater, cause he cut off the finger next to the last one he cut off.

We called him Lucky. After watching him machine for about a year, I quickly understood why.
He is lucky to be breathing. He tossed items large as a car out of a VTL once, and off of a Horiz. mill as well.

Wow Spikey......that way sucks what happened to your scoot. I have been away for a few months and I was sickened when I came upon the picture.I'm sure you will get it back into shape but the time and cash aren't always easily had. You may want to make some changes in the garage to avoid any repeats. After seeing your bad situation,I will for sure be making some changes in mine. Good luck for a speedy reserection.

1-the garage is no longer a den for smokers (including my girl)

2-the diesel heater was relocated

3- i poke my head in the garage every 20 minutes  ;)

Hey, stop picking on the kid, ya bunch of bullies! And don't worry about old Spikey Ben, he's still understandably upset.

Hey Ben, did you know that 78K owns a modern sports bike, but is too "chicken schmidt" to wheelie it? Now do me a favor mate, when you go to school on Monday, I want you to take a permanent marker and write on the boys toilet wall, "78K sits down to pee", ok?

And if you get caught, just tell your teacher that uncle Sammy made you do it, or he said he'd smack you again, only harder this time! Ha ha, Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

Actually I just have a harder time wheelie'ing than you do since I don't have that sheep riding with me for counter weight!!!
