The advantage of a 3 piece oil scraper ring over a one piece oil scraper ring that I'm aware of, is that there is an opportunity for oil to pass through the gap in the oil ring that will occasionally allow it to puff smoke, particularly when the engine is backed off for a corner etc.

With a 3 piece oil scraper ring, there is less opportunity for this to happen as the very thin oil rings can be set with their gaps opposed, reducing the opportunity for oil to pass thru.

Personally, I think it's a moot point, and won't hurt your bike, I see plenty of race bikes puffing a little smoke in 10 tenths racing, and it doesn't seem to bother the race teams much. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

The 3 piece rings run less tension too.

Also, if there is any piston rock at TDC or BDC, the 3 piece ring can "adjust itself" to compensate.
