corroded valves
« on: April 29, 2008, 11:21:48 AM »
I wasn't planning on replacing the valves on the 77 750K I'm rebuilding but I think my exhaust valves look screwed. Do these valves look salvageable and why are they completely white?  If I do replace the valves, what else do I have to do to the head to ensure a proper install and do the valve guide seals come in the honda oem top end gasket set?

I kept the images as links so you can see them a bit better at their full size.

thanks in advance and sorry for the stream of thought questions  ;D

The brownish deposits almost look like lead deposits. ??? Odd, whatever it is, seems to be just the two inboard (hottest?) cylinders.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

You will not know until you remove them and check to see if they are not bent or burnt. You might want to re-grind the valve seats depending on what you find.

The reason they are white is the engine has been running on the lean side.

my engine had even worse deposits than that

take them out and clean them against a rotary steel brush, these deposits can be rock hard

only then you'll be able to see if there's any pitting in the seat area and assess the guide's wear

Those aren't corroded.  They just have combustion deposits on them.
They don't have any obvious cracks or signs of leakage.  But, the important bits are where they contact the head.  Can't see that in the pictures.

Were you having compression issues before taking the head off?

Do all the exhaust ports look like they have the same deposits across the bank?

I'd probably replace the valve guide seals, since you have it torn down this far.
