Looking for Z1/KZ900 Kawasaki Message Board

I need to ask some assembly questions about my KZ900 that aren't covered in the book. There just has to be a way to install the carb assembly after the airbox is pressed into the frame - I just know it.

The carbs into stock airbox is a life and death struggle if the carb holders and the airbox hoses are old and hard...  gentle heat helps the situation, but the only real solution is to replace the airbox hoses (and potentially the carb holders).  I've done more than my fair share of cursing and swearing at those darned things...

Thanks fellas. I visited there and found several old threads on the same subject. You're right - new rubber # 1, heat # 2, lots of Armorall # 3 and it's still a pain.

I would ask the engineer 1 tiny question if he were with me today -why he could not live with slightly less volume in the airbox in the frame-tube area so you can slide it back - just 1/2" more...... what a pain in the butt.

Moving the stock airbox back would have been a very nice modification.  When you look at the different bikes, each brand has their design quirks - and the airbox is certainly a pain in the butt on those old KZ bikes.  Some of the Hondas allow the stock airbox to move back 1" - and that is very nice...  Ironically, the earlier Z1 airboxes are fairly easy to work with - it was just the 76-80 airboxes that're a real pain...
