Throttle set up on handlebars
« on: April 21, 2007, 07:47:22 PM »
I managed to secure myself a Santee style electrical box and now have my wiring neatly tucked away.  I am left with the OEM kill / start assembly on the right grip which also houses the throttle cables.  What cost friendly options are out there so that I can eliminate this?  Pics would be nice if anyone has some. My goal will be to have just the clutch lever, front bake m/c and lever, and throttle left on the handle bars.
Forgot to mention this is on a 77 CB750 running a set of T bars, atleast that is what I think they are called.

thanks in advance

This throttle is on the 750 project:

As well as this switch for the controls.  I needed to rid myself of the stock controls as I didn't want to drill my clubmans.

Also, my clutch lever is off a '78 GL1000, it is seperate from the left control switch.  Was about $20 shipped via ebay.

Thanks mkramer1121, that throttle set up is exactly what I am looking for.  How is the quality on this unit?  I already have a seperate clutch lever mount but that multi-function switch is quite neat.  are you currently running one of those?  Is it well built?

thanks

Motion pro has some pretty reasonably priced throttle controls as well -

I'm going to be using one of those on my 750, as well as getting a set of shorter cables from them.

The switch, well, I'm not 100% happy with it.  It heavy, thick plastic, not aluminum.  And for some reason it doesn't fit my bars like it should.  With it tightened all the way, its lose and spins.  I put a piece of tape around the bar, and that stops it from spinning, but with it only having 2 screw to mount, it bulges at one side.  You may want to ask Doug (see the bike of the month thread) about it as he has it on his cafe and he may have had a better experience with it.

For the throttle, its great for $30.  Made by Emgo, its painted (powdercoat?) black aluminum, and it uses 2 screws to mount.  I replaced the 2 black SHCS provided with stainless as after 2 weeks in the garage during winter the bolts were speckled with rust.  Also, I cut the throttle tube down as my grip was shorter then the tube, but I'm sure that's pretty standard based on what you are using.

I can't say anything about performance, as the bike is in the build stage.

Overall?  I'd buy the throttle again in a heart beat (they have a chrome version as well, and cyclex are great people), but the switch?  I don't know, the jury is still out.

That looks identical to what I have on my bike. Wiring was a pain to figure out, but I got there. And the neat part about the throttle drum, is that it looks like it came out of the same mold as the stock Honda one. Neat, huh?

Is it possible to use a Push/Pull throttle assembly on a set of carbs with provisions for only a Pull setup? I would think I could just block off the other hole on the assembly with a bolt of some sort...

If the return spring on the carbs has lots of oomph then the throttle will work with only one cable. I've done it with Sophie.

i have the same throttle as pictured,a lthough it came in a motion pro package.  good quality, bolts right up, looks  so much cleaner than stock. think I paid $20 for it. i'd recommend it. i moved the starter button underneath the seat. now if i could just find something to clean up the other side. the problem is the switch inside the clutch lever, methinks.

You could buy an early GL1000 clutch lever, its seperate from the switch housing.  Then you could get a universal switch like I purchased.  Cyclex has a bunch of clutch levers as well in chrome.

I ordered one of those EMGO throttles from my local parts guy today, $18.99 Cdn.  Also ordered up new throttle cables and clutch cable while I was at it.

Hello fellas.
Figure I'd revive this OLD POST..

I'm interested in the Motion Pro and Dennis Kirk.. Push/Pull Throttle.

I'd like to clean up my bars:

I contacted these companies and they all say inorder to work..NEW THROTTLE I must purchase cables as well ...is this true?  I just can't use the New throttle...with stock cables.   (1975 CB750)

See below links:

I plugged stock cables cables into my new throttle. I did have to make a small 1/8" spacer to put under the return cable as it went into the throttle housing. With that it works fine.
