For the Yorkshire men out there....beer?
« on: February 19, 2008, 04:59:11 pm »
I went to my local wine shop last nigh and they also stock some odd beers from around the World. I got 2 beers - Ruination (more on this another time) and Riggwelter (a Yorkshire Ale).

On the back of the bottle it says -Riggwelter -from old Norse: rygg - back and velte - to overturn. When a sheep is on its back and cannot get up without help, local dales dialect says its "rigged" or "riggwelted" - there is a picture of a black sheep on its back on the front of the bottle.

Any Yorkshiremen know this beer or is it simply for "export". It says "Black Sheep Brewery" and Brewed in Masham" - never heard of either! Anyway Im sitting here having a glass and its not bad....malt/hoppy ale.... ;D

cheers
Andy

I've seen it for sale down here in south west uk and thoroughly recommend it  ;D ;D

If I remember the Black sheep brewery was set up by the son of one of the famous brewing families (theakstons I think but I might be wrong on this point) who was reckoned to be a "no hoper" and was pretty much shunned by the family. ie he was the black sheep of the family, hence the name of the brewery.
I've drank it Draught in Newcastle too.

Oh....  I've just re-read your post and I'm not sure if I should reply.  I'm not a Yorkshireman.

I've recently discovered "Old Speckled Hen", and I'm in love.

I now have to MAKE myself buy something else when I go to the beer store, or its the only thing I'd ever get!

Old speckled hen is a fine drop of brew that I often get for myself. If you ever come across any of the Exmoor brewery beers they are pretty good too, I'm developing quite a taste for one called Exmoor Beast.
