New 550 owner in Philadelphia
« on: February 21, 2008, 06:15:21 AM »

I bought a 1978 cb550K in october so I only got to ride it for a few weeks before putting it away for the winter.  Its my first motorcycle and I'm hoping to do a little bit of work to it before the spring comes.  I've been reading these forums for a few months and I think they are a great resource!!

Welcome.  If you've been lurking here for a while, I don't have to remind you that these old bikes can resemble the screen name you've chosen.

So, what kind of work were you thinking of doing?

Well, I want to get it running as smoothly as possible- currently it is idling too high (around 2500 rpm) and even when I adjust the stop screw, it creeps back up.  I'm not sure what is causing this issue.

Additionally I need to replace or adjust the cam chain tensioner, because it sounds pretty awful at the moment.

Also I want to replace the exhaust with a 4 into 1, I think it makes the bike look much cleaner.

Aside from that I'd like to do some minor cosmetic work, replace or restore the seat.

While I'm not afraid to turn a wrench or take it apart, I have no experience working on motorcycles, but I have a clymer manual and some friends that know a bit and are willing to help.

I need to get moving soon though because I want to be riding in the spring.  The last thing I want is a bucket of parts once the weather breaks.

hello, i am new as well and like you my first bike was my 74 cb550. they are real sweet bikes and go forever. i want to be riding by spring also but my bike is completely stripped and im working on the frame right now. good luck with your bike. it sounds like your carbs may need a rebuild and synchronizing, very importaint to a smooth runner. the rebuild is rather easy though as most things are on these bikes.
