No neutral or oil pressure light
« on: February 20, 2008, 09:13:57 PM »
I've been meaning to ask this for awhile, but I just kept on forgetting for whatever reason.

Since I acquired my 75 550, I've never had the neutral nor oil light working.  all the connections are strong and clean, bulbs are good, and I dont see any obvious shorts in my wiring.
so, why might those two lights not work, but I have a hi beam, and turn signal light?

Check the fuses under the left side cover. Maybe its that simple.

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Have you checked the neutral light switch, or the oil pressure switch?

Check for bad connections in the harness located under the shift linkage cover.Neither of these switches is known to be overly failure prone, for both to go;I would be surprised.Rock On.

How would I check the switches to confirm they're good? sorry, I'm a mechanical guy, not electrical.

Well, Mr. Cyborg, both the units complete an electrical path to the engine case as part of their normal function.

You haven't told me what test equipment you have available, so I'll assume you have a meter, that anyone can have for $10-20.

Disconnect the switch unit being tested.  Set your meter to read Ohms, low end scale. Place one lead on an engine bolt and the other lead on the post you previously disconnected.

Your neutral switch should read zero or nearly so when the trans is in neutral.  At all other gear selections it should read very high, or infinity.  (Which is a pretty high number)

Your oil switch is just the opposite.  When the engine is stopped and has no oil pressure, the meter should read Zero or a very low resistance.  When the engine is running, the meter should show very high numbers on the scale.

Alternately, with your ignition switch on, connecting each of the wires that were previously connected to the switch, with a jumper wire, to an engine bolt, should make the indicator lamp go on.  Technically, you can do this last test with the wires still connected to the switch.  If you can get the lamps to light in this fashion, the sender switches are bad by inference.

Don't forget to lube those joints Mr. Mechanical guy!  ;D

I had exactly the same issue with my 74 550.  The problem turned out to be a black wire in the headlight bucket was pulled out of its connector.  After looking at the wiring diagram this wire provided the +12 volt power to the neutral and oil indicator bulbs.  The neutral switch and the oil sending unit provide the ground connection for the light bulbs. If you were to take the bike out of neutral and measure the voltage on the lug of the neutral switch (with the wire connected) it should measure about 12 volts (assuming your battery is good) if it does not then there is something wrong with the wiring.

I hope this helps.
