80s? model cb550 spark issue!
« on: February 22, 2008, 07:39:31 PM »
Ok lets get to business boys, heres my problem, and i need your solution!  ;)     Ok, picked this up from a guy in michigan, drove it around and it ran ok, slight miss on the top end, i figured carb issue.    Go out the next day to start it and its got no spark on any cylinder! ok heres where it gets crazy, 2 days later the damn thing runs and drives for about 10 minutes and dies, no spark.     Im getting intermittent spark, now what can cause this? Points and condensers or coil?

#1. Change the points and condensors. If the bike's been sitting, they've deteriorated, and these symptoms are typical of that...
#2. Check the operation of the KILL switch on the handlebar. Sometimes, non-use makes these get a little corroded. Try operating it about 20 times back & forth and see if it helps (this wipes the contacts off a little). If it does, take the mount off the handlebars and put a drop of oil on the contacts and operate it some more to clean and lube things up.
#3. Check the wires that go to and from that same switch, inside the headlight. The little bullet connectors can get corroded from sitting, too, and cause similar problems.
#4. Under the gas tank, at the coils, there is one black wire that "splits" to the wo coils' black-white wire. Make sure those bullet connectors are clean, too. There's also a yellow one and blue one under there, check them, too.

That's the whole ignition circuit, except the yellow and blue wires where they connect to the engine (points plate) at the right rear of the engine. Check those for corrosion, too.

Then, you'll be an ignition expert!

I thought the 83 CB550SC nighthawk was a DOHC engine with electronic ignition.  Possibly CD type.  If so, you will need to get a new ignitor box(es) as the internal electrolytic capacitors fail with time and heat.

If it is a DOHC, these posts should be in the other bikes forum.

its not a DOHC, i know for a fact because i just had the cover off to adjust the valves.....this motor is in a suzuki quadzilla frame, and to be honest, it fits perfectly! my plans for it is to drag race with it after some engine work.

Last year model CB550 on the US was the 78. The numbers on the case can be used to tell exactly what year it was produced.

As to your original query,  follow Hondaman's instruction.

Have you done ANY maintenance to the points?  Gap, timing, file the crud off the contacts?

I checked the gap of the points and they are both set at .016. I didnt adjust the timing because it ran when i got it. i know it has a bog in it, but that could be ignition, carbs, and who knows what else....today is my day off and i plan on doing exactly what hondaman said, and ill be back with the verdict, i just bought a battery last night and its been charging for quite some time, so we should be good to go!

i know it has a bog in it

 ???
From Webster's:
1 - Bog n :
Wet spongy ground.

2 - Bog vb :
To cause to sink into or as if into a bog : IMPEDE- usu. used with down : to become impeded usu. used with down

Perhaps it would help if you removed the wet spongy ground from the engine?  Should be easy to spot. :)
