Hi Tramp, yes, the older gent in the video warming the bike up is the rider and I am going on 62. :D :D :D :D :D

We are still on for the 10th of May in two weeks time, but instead of the standing Kilometer, we will be attacking the standing Mile distance, target time 36.63 seconds.

After the kilo being dropped at Woodbridge on the 10th May, I got in touch with another promoter to ask if any of his events could include a kilometer sprint. He replied over the week end that he couldn't. He did however say that he is putting a sprint on at RAF Honington over the kilo for a car club and he will be asking them if I can do some shakedown tests at their event.

If we manage to get in on this meeting, the target for the standing kilo will be 25.01 seconds.

Time for crossed fingers and all that. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Well guys, less than a week to the big day and all is in place.

The bike went away last week to have a longer sub frame constructed. Chris and I picked it up Friday night and it looks fine.

It will allow me to get my rear end over the bikes rear end and hopfully cause the tyre to hook up better.

The only thing left on the wish list now is, good weather and a trouble free meeting.

Sam,

I have...let me check...zero land speed records, and you didn't ask for advice but I keep thinking about your traction issue.

Maybe your new subframe will do the trick, but do you think maybe having just a touch of rear suspension would keep the rear wheel from spinning up?  I know you have trouble keeping the front end down, but just 1" of travel might be enough to shift some weight and let the rear wheel follow any ripples in the track surface.

Have you tried that with any success in the past?

Hi Steph, I know I didn't ask for your advise but thanks for the intrest.
The reason for running with a rigid rear end is two fold. #1, the shock weighs a ton. #2, without the shock the ride height can be much lower.
I don't doubt that the shock would help as you said but, I don't consider it a real problem as the bike is mainly intended for top speed.
The lengthening of the sub frame might help to cure the spinning up but, the main reason for doing it was, to make me more comfortable on the bike and to be able to tuck in better.
Remember, I have only ridden the bike twice since the rebuild, and only once before and that was nearly 10 years ago.
As I learn the traits of the bike, anything I don't understand or things that bother me, I ask people that know.
One of my first worries was, was the clutch functioning properly? When I asked my motor builder who has several of these bikes he said that's how they are. When you start to feed the clutch out, nothing happens until the last half inch of travel. With a bike that relies on a lot of clutch slip to get under way, well all I can say is Honda messed up as they used this design of clutch for six years. The 95 onward bikes are much easier to fire off the line.
When I have finished testing for top speed and turn my attentions to the shorter standing start disciplines, the fact that it spins up on launch might be an advantage.
As has been said elsewhere, when I gear down for the standing quarter, the spin will be greater. This might not be a bad thing as the spinning of the wheel off the line will do away with the need to slip a clutch that doesn't like being slipped.
I hope you can figure my reasoning's, and like I said, thanks for the intrest Stephen.

Sam ;)

The lower ride height takes a lot of the "frontal area" away to help you get those last few MPH.  Probably worth more to you than rear suspension at these top speed contests.  Works makes an "ultralight" shock that I looked into once.  It was beautiful, but about the same price per pound as pure platinum.

That clutch sounds like a pain in the butt.  If you spin up at one of those standing start events, is there a rev limiter that will kick in?  Is that even a worry on a 2 stroke?

Are there rules against square section drag race tires?  Might add some weight though.

When is the next event?  It took Rossi four races this season to get his traction issues resolved.  I have faith you can do it in three.

I think the smallest MT is 5.5" and won't fit in. :( :(
The rev limmiter is my left foot and how fast it can react to the rev counter ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
The first time I rode it before I bought it, I just kept changing up. When the guy that owned it asked what I was reving it to, I told him I didn't know as the front brake resavoir was in the way.
I knew I had missed the first change at 12,500 where he had told me to change, after that I just kept changing but the needle had gone into hiding behind the res ;D ;D ;D
I got back onto the bike and tucked right in and could see upto 13,300 on the dial. ::) ::) ::) must have been goinground to 14,000.
It scared me #$%*less, so I bought it ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
Next event is this Saturday, It's a speed trap with a mile run in.

Well guys, It's now down to just hours before we set off for Woodbridge and the first high speed testing of the RS.
We leave about 2.30pm on the 260 mile trek down south. We have the team booked into a hotel near to the airfield and should get there early this evening.
We will get to the venue around 8.30am Saturday, unload and straight to technical inspection. I'm not sure when we will be running as the meeting is being split between flyer's and qualifying for the drag racing side of the meeting.
I'm hoping that someone will have a lap top so that I can let you know how It's going.
Chris has the big CR on the highest gearing we have for it (18/39) It should be intresting to see if it pulls it.
Last time he did a flier he recorded 127mph with the old stock motor on 18/44 gearing, he was about 50lbs heavier at the time.  ::)
If I pull this thing off, there's going to be one drunken Sammy tomorrow night. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I forget how long the runup is before you hit the time on a "flyer" but tell Chris to expect at least 150mph ( don't ask ;) ).

I really look forward to hearing how it goes and hope most of all that you and the team have a good "time" ;) :)

Total cost for the weekend, $1,400-00 >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( >:( and what did we get.......a stiff head wind all weekend. :'( :'( :'(
After all that we still don't know how fast the bloody thing is, all we know is it will go faster given the right conditions.
All the British flying records should be no problem as the bike bettered the flying quarter and flying mile speeds.
The only one it didn't better was the flying kilometer, it was just 0.22mph off it. >:( >:( >:( It's best speed was 118.30mph.
when it was announced that it had bettered the records, people started to chat with me and the consensus of opinion was that there was at least another 10mph to be had, if not more given still air.
To give you an idea of how strong the wind was, Chris could not get the big CR836 to match the speed of the old stock motor
on the same gearing, with the 836s extra 26bhp and a loss of about 45lb off of his body weight.
Perhaps the best thing to come out of the weekend was, I picked up another sponsor by way of the Hotel we stayed in. ;D ;D ;D
The next move is the dyno to find out what the bikes power is and where it falls off.
After that it's nitrous time as I had an offer of help from one of the UKs top wet nitrous tuners, and the good thing is he only lives the other side of town and also has experience with RSs 8) 8) 8) 8)

Needless to say, the big booze up was a little refined, I only got drunk and not rat arsed. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Too bad, Sam. I can't imagine the frustration you felt after all the preparation and the build up before the Woodbridge event. Congrats on the standing kilometer record, though.

Any plans after the dyno and nitrous?

we're all pulling for you.

That's nice of you mate, but I think Sammy would prefer a blow job............ ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thanks burma, it wasn't the kilo that I bettered, I was 0.22mph under that one. It was the flying Mile and flying quarter that were bettered.
They were not official records, just that the speeds were exceeded. I can only lay claim to bettering the speeds.
With a bit of luck there will be an official records event in October, should have the bike sorted by then and be in with a very good chance.
Next meeting is a drag race in June as I need to sort the quarter gearing out before performing at a sprint in July on my local track at Aintree.
The next flying event is in August when Mike (the head master) Rieck joins the team at Elvington.
We'll probably do another flier in September at woodbridge to test before the records event in October to make sure all is going to plan.
If all goes to plan and the record attempt doesn't bankrupt me, I'd Like to take the bike to the southern States for a little bit of bracket racing, while everyone over here is freezing their bollocks off. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I've been offered a ride on a Harley but would rather ride my own bike.
