Just had some good news guys, I didn't notice but I got an email late last night to let me know of an extra event that is on.
The event is quarters and top speed trap (about a mile and a quarter run in).
The good news is the way he is going to set it up.
He is going to set the top speed traps up in both directions with the difference, ie the bit in the middle will be a kilometer. 8) 8) 8)
He told me that the markings on the runway are still there from the last time a world records meeting was held there some years back and are +/- 1mm accurate to 1 kilometer. (FIM spec)
He's going to let me run the standing and flying kilo in both directions to cancel out any wind advantage/disadvantage.
What a guy, it means the bike can be tested under the same conditions that it would encounter at an official records meeting.
If I can get the mixture somewhere near right in time, we should be ready for some fireworks ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
There is also the possibility of a dyno session but I'm not holding my breath :-\ :-\ :-\

Stay tuned, Sam. ;)

The bike had it's first proper outing over the quarter mile at York Raceway yesterday.
We played about with the carb some and jetted down a couple of jet sizes.
On the first run, it launched that hard, I went without my legs and had to shut it down to get my feet on the pegs and change gear. :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[ I felt a right fool but wasn't expecting it. ;D ;D ;D ;D It ran 14.9.
On the second run, I launched it with my left foot on the peg. I was running against a 250 Ducati who was in the same class as me.
It bogged a little off the line and the Ducati grabbed the lead. I gave the clutch a little dab and the Ducati went backwards, ;D ;D ;D it turned a 14.4 on that run.
My last run due to the weather was a cracker, I returned to find it had run 13.4 @ 102+ mph.
It was allmost a full second quicker than the world standing quarter time but half a second slower than the British record, which I said would be difficult in the first place.
Just as we were packing up, I met the guy who will be doing the nitrous kit for the bike later in the year.
It was a good meeting but I am feeling a little the worse for ware as I sit here at work :'( :'( :'( oh for a younger body :D :D :D

Glad to hear you were able to set aside the walker and hop on a screamer for the day ;D ;D ;D

In all seriousness I'm really excited for ya Sam. Sounds like the best outing so far with the "prize" not so far off. Must have been a great day at the track and am very happy to hear it :) :) :)

Yes it was a good day Sean, just a couple of rain/hail showers put a bit of a dampener on it.
Chris tried out a new full streamliner on the bike, it didn't make it any faster but it didn't slow it either.
He just wanted to test it for stability before runing it at a top speed event we are doing on 5th July.
I was really pleased with my time, it matched the big CRs times with the 736 motor. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Sounds like you've got it hooking up now - did you run the longer subframe to help the launch?  I'm surprised you hit all 6 gears in a 1/4 mile.  Did it rev out in 6th?

I'm really in awe of this whole project.  Hope my reflexes and balls hold up like yours.  Don't take that the wrong way.  ;)

I'm so smitten I went out and bought a Sam costume (slightly used but it should shine up):

Everything was fine Steph, I said it was just a matter of geting the setup right.
The longer sub frame wasn't only to get my weight over the rear tyre, it allowed me to get behind the streamlining.
The lower gearing made getting off the line real easy, not sure if there was any wheel spin as we were a couple of team members down who would have been looking out for it, I never felt anything myself.
The gearing was spot on, it launched without having to slip the clutch and I changed gear at 12,000 through the box and it peaked in top as I crossed the line.
I might try gearing it up next time I go to that track, it may run a tad quicker just useing 5 gears, we'll see what happens.

Been keeping up with this thread pretty much for a while now and really a good read. Pretty cool Sam, the way the bike is responding and all. I could stand to lose some poundage myself. You are down to the area I used to be in, when I was in th military. Couldn't afford to gain much while I was in their control cause you could end up losing your position and that could have cost me my civilian job as well. Kinda eased up when I retired and gained some in the meantime. So, my hat's off to YOU Sam, for your ability to lose some of that. 8) ;) Keep up the good work Sam, on the work with the bike AND the weight loss!

                             Take care, Bill ;)

I'd been 161lbs for quite a while. Over the last few months I've been 156 but dropped to 153lbs last week.

Well we have the footage but can't get the computer to see the disc >:( >:( >:( >:( >:(

The good news is, when I recorded 13.4 seconds on my last run, I thought it was a good run, everything felt and sounded right.

Acording to the video footage that plays on my DVD at home it was crap ::) ::) ::) ::) the launch was nowhere near as good as I thought so there should be better times to come. ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)

Also on the recording is a really strong run by Chris on the big CR in serious sprint mode with the full frontal streamlining. ::) ::) ::) ::)

This time tomorrow night, I'll be having a couple of beers with the team in our hotel in Woodbridge.
Before that can be done, there's 6 hours more of work ( :D :D :D :D) about 6 hours sleep in the morning, 2 gardens to sort out (looking after a mates garden while he is on holiday) then the 265 mile drive to Woodbridge.
Chris will drive the first leg, about 125 miles and me the rest, I'll need that beer when I get there.
On the Saturday I'll be putting the RS over the standing and flying kilometer for the first time.
The bike is running much better than it was the last time we were there and we are praying for still conditions, we had a strong head wind to contend with when it ran 118.3mph last time there.
This will be Chris's first flier with the full streamlining on the big CR, I'm just hoping that he puts the bike into top gear this time.
He has got used to only using 4 gears over the quarter and I'm sure he sometimes forgets it has another gear he can use on the longer distances. ;D ;D ;D
I'm going to put his mobile phone on video and strap it to the back of the bike so we can replay it to make sure he uses all the gears. :D :D :D :D :D
I will report on the happenings on Monday night.

About 120-125mph is the magic time for my bike to switch to 5th. It accelerates like it's in 3rd or 4th at this point, but anything below that speed and 5th acts like the cruising gear it is.

Chris probably has a nice close ratio transmission and I'm just another armchair racer, but... well................

 .......so I'm an armchair racer, there's worse things to be.....right? :-[ :-[ :-\ :-\ :'( :'( :'(  :P :P :P :D :D :D

$3,200 is a little to much for a close box Sean :o :o :o no, it's just a stock box in there.
One of the problems I have Sean is trying to get Chris to understand the basics of what makes a bike perform the way it dose in respect of power, weight, aerodynamics and gearing.
When Chris finishes a run, I ask him questions, usually like, what was it reving to when you crossed the line?
Some of the figures that he gave me didn't stack up.
On two runs he told me he crossed the line with 7,000rpm showing on the tach.
On the second of the two runs he was 9mph slower but was running on higher gearing.
He was obviously in fourth gear but wouldn't accept the fact, and that's why I am going to record the sound from on board to get to the bottom of his top end problems.
He blamed it on the head wind but his time over the quarter mile was timed on the same run and was more than respectable.
We'll see what happens this time allthough the weather forcast is not good.
Another thing about speeds, don't forget what you see on your speedo and what we are timed at are different types of speed :D :D :D

Too true Sam. One of these days I hope to get "trapped" ;) ;D ;D

My electric tach is pretty good for measuring rpm though. In 4th gear I take it to 10,000rpm before kicking up to 5th in order to be where the acceleration is fastest. 4th gear is actually dropping power at 10,000rpm but 5th doesn't really pick up until after 8000 rpm. It can take a few seconds to get screaming in 5th if I kick in any earlier. Seems like forever if I'm revving up from 7000rpm :P

Took me a while, and some pretty long open roads to find that sweet spot in 5th gear but dropping into it at the right time seems to really add to the top speed.

I got my track leathers now, Sam. Hope to have some solid #'s for ya before the year is out ;) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
