ever stop to think that running with that ballast might give you the traction you need with the juice?

Spoke to Trev last week, probably soon after Christmas.
Things might be changing for me at work, I'll be working the same hours as Chris so we should be able to organise things easier.

Hey Sam... did your spark plugs confirm it going rich when you hit the Nitrous button?

I'll bet your ignition is fine... but there's something wrong with the Fuel delivery system with the Nitrous... how are you injecting it? what's the Fuel pressure when the button is down? and are you decreasing the timing prior to the run since you don't have a retard mechanism?

I've run 10lbs in a single pass several times over the years... and Trust me the one thing I've learned is it's absolutely the most unforgiving HP in the world... but when it's right... it's brutally cheap and totally addicting...

+1. I saw Richard Hammond on "Top Gear" with a clapped out 1970's Jag XJ6 crap on a Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche turbo when the boys fitted it with a $1000.00 NOS injection installation. That old boat anchor of an engine was making in excess of 500 BHP, farking incredible! ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

before I make a pass with Nitrous we do three tests

Check the ignition for retard

Flowing fuel pressure

Nitrous solenoid flow...

Takes a few minutes but you won't blow stuff up quite as often if you do that...

Hi Guys, I've a little more time now ;D ;D ;D I'd be lost without work as I'm not on line at home. ::)

Keith, I'm new to nitrous and don't know a great lot about the finer points.

I had the system fitted by the manufacturer with a 5bhp shot (12.5% power increase)

I have been having issues with the jetting all season prior to fitting the nitrous and am down to a very small main jet that others running the same motor would never get down to irrespective of weather or altitude.

After the nitrous guy told me that in his opinion the spark was not strong enough to burn extra fuel charge, I got to wondering if that was the reason I am jetting way lower than others using the same motor.

If I have a poor spark and run the same jetting that others are using with good results on the same day it would show up as rich on my plug readings as the spark isn't burning the amount of fuel that I am putting in.

When I had the nitrous fitted it worked static (I even tried it myself, it was OK) but would not work under load, the more I used it the slower my times went over the quarter.

If I get to the stage where I start upping the BHP shots I'll be needing an ignition system that will retard on comand when the nitrous is fired, this is the system that will be fitted after Christmas and the whole thing will be set up on the dyno.

The system is a one off type developed buy the Nitrous system manufacturer and Boyer Bransen.

Okay quickie Nitrous class... should we start a new thread or keep it here?

Basically Nitrous has more oxygen per volume then normal oxygen.... like 33% vs 23 % or something like that...  so when you inject it into the air stream it gives you the ability to add more Fuel... for a given volume of air... it also has the innate ability to decrease the inlet air temp significantly...

Because the intake charge has more O2 and more Fuel... it has the ability to produce more HP...    bout that simple...

What is really cool about Nitrous is that it increases the combustability of the fuel charge by giving it so much more O2 to burn with... so if there is an issue with knotty type pistons or heads that have flame probagation issues... Nitrous fixes the snot out of it... ( think BIG compression in the 14-1 range )  the only way you get the high compression is to fill every nook and cranny with Piston or Heads...

Hmmm  Because the fuel/air charge burns faster you want to wait just a bit later to fire it off... hence the requirement to run a retarding device...    One of the things you might want to think about is retarding the timing a few degree's up front then you won't need a retard device...

Oh as far the spark is concerned... grab one of those spark plug testers ( allows you to move the spark plug away from the ground )...  it simply doesn't take much spark.... and Nitrous rarely blows out the spark like a Supercharger... ( I've had that trouble in the past too )

Keep us posted Sammy, I'm (seriously) looking at a NOS kit for my twin engined bicycle (yes, I am still being serious) Land Speed Record attempt at Lake Gairdner in South Australia in March '09.

I've found some cheap NOS kits on EBay that guys with regular motorised bycycles have used, with good results, so I'm tempted to install a kit for when my pilot (not me, I'm too heavy) hits terminal velocity on the salt. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Keith, whats the reasoning with the 5lt minimum tank size in the rules for Modified Production ?
My tank is only 1lt and the bike runs all day on it. ;D ;D
Would I have to have a new tank made.

Lots of the rules are written for all size bikes and some of them have origins from the older days like the Harley's dual tanks...

So I'd suspect that is simply a hold over from then...  When I write the motorcycle rules for the ECTA it's better for our competitors to have a smooth flow between Maxton and Bonneville... so we keep mostly the same rules...

Sorry for a quick aside...what do you think of this here RS Sam?  Was 1995 the year when they were updated?

http://houston.craigslist.org/mcy/929142186.html

The guy's been trying to sell it for a couple of months now - there's not much of a market for these here.  I'm sure he's losing his shirt at that price.

I've heard you go through a crankshaft every 1k miles - are they getting hard to find?

Hi Steph, It's a good price for what you are getting with the leathers thrown in.
There again, you don't need leathers, do you ? ;D ;D
The RS does need a crank every 1K miles but they are not over expencive.
It's the years before this one that parts are hard to find for.
