starter switch disasembly - frozen screws
« on: February 22, 2008, 01:31:25 PM »
hi all - this is a great site and i think ya'll are great! you've already been very helpful.  ok, here's my problem.  i have a 72' CB 750 with extremely low mileage and it's gorgeous.  but it's developed a problem with the starter button.  i've got it traced as an intermittent connection between the starter button and the handlebar ground.  fine and dandy.  i've flooded the assembly with contact cleaner but that hasn't cleared up the issue.  i'd like to disassemble the switch assembly (yes, inside a box) but the assembly screws are FROZEN solid.  i don't want to bugger up the phillips screws with too much force.  does someone know of a good penetrant to loosen these screws? I've soaked the assembly with WD 40, and the switch just laughed at me. (i can still hear it)  i'm lucky..this bike is..well..mint...and i aim to keep it that way.  any helpful suggestions would really be appreciated.

You might take a look a this thread. I've never tried it as yet, but within it you will find a reference to 50/50 acetone/transmission fluid which claims to be very effective. However, you may need to be careful about adverse affects on plastic depending upon what is around where you are working in there.

hey i got it! woohooo..let the fun begin.  and as for the ATF and paint thinner, i used exactly that thread this past fall and i must say, it works as advertised!  though i would really hesitate to use it on these plastic parts.  i was able to loosen these screws by letting it soak a bit longer, then swinging the throttle cables out of the way to get more direct purchase. thanks all!
