More over priced crap
« on: August 02, 2005, 07:42:27 PM »
I have a new knack of stumbling over stupid CB750 items that are outrageously overpriced, then of course, posting them here so we can all #$%* about it.  To the people willing to pay that much:  It's a freaking ignition switch, get over it.

Enjoy!

I dont care if it is "sandcast". it is just an ignition switch. Not worth $400!

I'm on my way to the bike scrap yard, I know where I can get $1,000,000 worth of these ignition switches!!!

I can finally tell my boss to "Take this job and shove it".  I'm quitting tomorrow and by Monday I will be an ebay millionaire!

22 people have bid on that switch.  I figure the 21 losers will still want one and who knows how many other suckers are out there.  Oops, I meant customers.

I just saw an old 1983 Suzuki for sale on my way home.  From what I could see it sure looked like a "sandcast" to me!!  Imagine the profit I could make parting that out!

If people is bidding for it, maybe it's worth 400 bucks for them. It's a recessed ignition, very hard to find, and once you have spent a fortune in your sandcast restoration you can't spoil it with a non-period part. Definitely it have it's value for a restorer, because if you only need an ignition switch you can find it new for much less.

I sell stuff on ebay once in a while and have found that when some people get in a bidding war, they have to win, no matter what the cost.  For example, I found two pulleys off a 302 c.i. Ford in my garage.  Instead of throwing them away, I listed them on ebay.  Seven days and fifteen bids later, they sold for $123.00.

Even this does seem a bit high. A recessed ignition and 2 keys went for $416 back in April and I think there is another current auction that includes ign., 2 keys and the matching fork lock. The recessed ign. was used on the sandcast of course, but well beyond the last sandcast ser. # also. I keep informal track of some of this stuff in case I (or my executer  ;)) decide to part out my K0. From what I have seen so far, my bike is worth more as bits and pieces than it is as a whole.  ;D

The price to be paid for concours restorations. Then the bike will set a new level in pricing when it's sold. Then everyone with any Honda will think they can get the same for theirs. This happens with the cars and I'm sure it will happen here. $2700 steering wheels, $7400 quarter panels, $3500 trunk finish panels...... yup know the trend very well.

If you see the picture of the ad, the key have a rubber gromet on it. The key hole was recessed so the grommet can go in. The idea was to make the switch waterproof -or at least to withstand rain- It was discontinued early.

In a nutshell...

Raul's correct. From what I have been able to find out, the recessed switch, in conjunction with the plugged key, was to keep weather out of the ignition. As it turns out, it had the opposite affect so the switch design was changed and the recessed ignition and plugged keys were discontinued. Interestingly, a set of 2 plugged keys alone have gone for over $100 on eBay several times. I was able to get a brand new set of two to match my lock numbers for $30 from Hondakeys.com.. great service there by the way.

I would assume the K1 does, to protect the rear contacts, but I'm not sure. Perhaps someone with a K1 could verify. In looking at the parts list, there is a part number change between the 750 (K0) and K1, but would assume that had more to do with the tumbler mech. in the ignition switch being flush rather than recessed.

The K1 also have the rubber boot. That's only to protect the contacts from weather. The key plug is something different. Check the ad to see what we're talking about. Another Sandcast unique things are the short chainguard, the non-lipped front mudguard and the different profile fork leg in the top the change in diameter is more "abrupt" while in the following versions it's more "rounded". I'm talking where the fork seal goes, that the leg have a bigger diamenter.

...so you're saying someone has to pay much much more for an inferior part.

cheers to those people for wanting to restore a jap bike with junk peices.

I think some would say they are paying the premium because the bike/part is rare, which they are. How much they are willing to pay is, well, I guess a personal thing. When you think about it, most of the bikes we favor here on this site could be deemed less than state-of-the-art by current standards also, but obviously they have value to us.

My 1970 CB- 450 Twin has such a recessed ignition and key.  I would guess that Honda used them through out their model line in 1969 and 1970  I only paid $500 for the bike.  Maybe I should sell the switch and key, put an aftermarket on and have a $ 100 excellent ride.

As long as the cable plug is the same then that would be a good idea.

I guess it all depends in what are you restoring: a runner or a concours bike. If you start restoring a sandcast and have spent already big dough, you are in trouble. If you replace similar parts you will have a good looking and running bike, more expensive than any other running bike and not concours. I guess in that situation there is no turning back; you have to bite the bullet and restore it to factory spec. I know some bikes have been out of competition for things like wrong cable ties.

I suppose if one is a purist, then having things just so means something, but as for me,I don't think that I would get to ripped up over the ignition switch. What is the big deal it does the same thing!
