Hello everyone - I'm a Honda nut and in need of help....
« on: February 23, 2008, 11:57:45 AM »
Hi everyone - my first post on this forum just to say "hello" and introduce myself.

I began my race career back in 1998 with a single cylinder 581cc Ikuzawa Honda that previously belonged to a friend Matt Wood who took it to 5th in the IOM TT. It wasn't long before Grand Prix 250s beckoned, followed by a Moriwaki firestorm and then the crashes started - and they started to hurt!

So with my head and wallet in tatters I bought a rolling chassis 350 K4 Honda to go into classic racing and discovered the fun of building and restoring bikes. The CB350 K4 is long gone but my next project, a 497cc Black Bomber is still my main race bike and ongoing development project. I seem to spend more time in the garage than on track now but that's OK as it's marginally safer.

It was while at a local bike tuners with the Bomber that one of the workshop guys commented on how good it looked and what a shame I hadn't built a CR750. He then went on to say how it was impossible to do because the kit parts are so rare and well, that was like a red rag to a bull and the rest is (almost) history!

I'm now full embroiled in building my CR750 replica and to solve the camchain woes of the originals, I've grafted a DOHC CB750 crank into the SOHC motor giving me hy-vo primary and camchains. The motor is now built but untried as I'm underway with the chassis now. The question over whether the DOHC crank will work is still unknown!!

It's a labour of love and as I've found, one that the few people with the real knowldge don't seem keen to help you out with. I've struggled along the way with all sorts of challenges but worked through them on my own, burning many hours and a fair bit of money in the process. It's bordering on obsession but as long as the wife doesn't find out I think I'm safe :-)

So that's where I'm up to and will no doubt be asking silly questions soon on other areas of the forum. Glad to be joined up and I hope I can bring some of the information I've learned in the process, to the forum for others to enjoy...

Look forward to hearing from you all - keep the shiny side up!

Welcome to the forums!  I'm a fairly new member myself and can not believe how much I have learned and benefited from these pages! Your project sounds awesome and I know I would love to see some photos of it, I'm sure other members would as well.

Keep us posted!

Welcome to the site M'lord  ;D

I've been around the site long enough to know if you ask a question you never have to wait long for an answer. Be great to see some pics of your project too.

Well I have a few pics of the engine build - plan was to write the whole thing up in terms of what I did so that if the darn thing runs, I can share the knowledge instead of it being a black art known only to the few...I just need the time to write the detail down but will surely post some pictures soon!

Thanks for the welcome guys - good to know I'm not the only one out there  :P

I did get asked a similar question from a guy in Australia who was building a 750 motor with a 900 DOHC crank - he was claiming an extra 7mm stroke by using a super thick base gasket....sounded a bit odd so don't know if that'll work? What stroke would the 1100 give?!

Welcome.  If you're like most of us on here, you might want to write the details down while you can still recall them ;D  I can't wait to read the story.
