my pecock is leaking all over the place.
« on: August 05, 2005, 11:48:06 AM »
i know. ...what am i, 12?

The threaded bowl on the bottom of my petcock on my 72 cb350f has sprung a leak.

My question is: Is this a common size that i can pick up from any bike of this era? Or can i seal it with tank sealer?

Thanks for any inforamtion. i'm going to go try and grow-up.

First you must learn control :)

Seriously,  you should try and take it apart.  The orings are probably shot and thats why it may be leaking.  I repaired my 76' 550 Petcock last year with a new oring from the hardware store.  Good as new, total cost 58cents.   I'm not saying that is your issue and I'm not familiar with what a 72 CB350F petcock looks like.  But if it's leaking it probably wouldn't hurt to take it apart and see whats going on in there.  Is it leaking from the front, where the turn mechanism is or flowing down from where it mounts to the tank?

I'm sorry, let me clarify. i was too busy laughing at myself.

I have identified that the leak is coming from a pinhole that is actually in the "bowl" part of the petcock. I was checking most of the other obvious places that it may be leaking (anywhere it connects to another part) when the little jerk started spouting a STEADY stream of fuel from the side of that bowl. I took it off and sure enough the inside looks like hell.

does anyone know if these were standard parts or will i have to find a petcock that was specific to that tank?

But seriously..I snapped off my standtube last year, so I decided to just replace the whole standtube/petcock unit....supposedly, according to the parts guy, it was one of the last 35 in existence! (I'm not sure if I believe him)...the whole unit cost me 70 bucks, but I decided to go new because of how the old one looked. I got mine (OEM) through the Honda dealer.

If you just have a pinhole in the bowl, I would drain the tank, remove the petcock, patch with JB Weld and ride.  While you're at it, you should also go ahead and replace the O-Ring -- cheap insurance!

I had the same problem.  Easy fix is a new O-ring and JB weld for the pin hole. hasn't leaked since.

Anyone know the size of the O-ring that goes in the petcock's fixing nut to meet the tank.  I was hoping to head to the hardware store tomorrow (I finally saved up my 58¢), but won't have access to my bike to pull the petcock.  And, what material should I be looking for that is gas resistant?

thanks...

Basically they'll probably have a drawer of orings.  I just brought my old dried out oring to the store and matched it up.  Best way is to bring the old one.  Sorry can't be of more help.
