need 400/4 seat
« on: August 05, 2005, 06:07:44 PM »
The sides of my seat are cracked in several places. Has anyone ever tried welding this? Tried that thread where someone mentioned new 750 seats, but they won't get back to me.

Where can I get a new seat or good condition pan for a CB400F?

Haven't tried welding one. I have a goofy-looking K/Q seat pan currently on my 400f project bike. I don't know what the pan looks like, but I can check it out if you get desperate.

I shaped and cut replacement skirts for the 550 and the Triple out of 18ga. and welded them to the pan. Then, for the re-upholstery Idrilled holes around the circumference of the new skirt and welded in small nails with the points in and up, cut the heads off flush with the outside of the skirtand ground everything smooth. It works.
If it's worth doing at all it's worth over-doing.

I found and repaired a nice stock seat. I have to re-foam and buy a new cover, but it should fit fine.

Hi Uncle, if your seat pan has cracks in the side skirt, I have found the best repair is to cut and shape strips of 30-40 thou steel to fit across the cracks and spot weld them into place. Trying to weld metal which has corroded thin has little strength and usually breaks again. The double thickness at the repair sites does not cause any major problem when re-covering.

Thanks folks. I shall investigate both routes.
