OMFG....im going to kill it!
« on: November 14, 2013, 12:02:39 PM »
Ok gentlemen here is my problem. I have replaced every electrical component on my bike 1976 cb750k, except for the stator and field coil. I was burning up fuses and came to the conclusion that my fuse block was bad. At that time i was still using the original box. The bike no longer blows fuses but, now even with a brand new sealed battery unit it will not maintain a charge. It will run for a while but eventually the lights dim to nothing and she shuts down. I'm concerned my brand new rec/reg is burned out. It no longer heats up during operation like it did before. could this be due to a bad coil and stator?

Get a manual, check the stator output (even I can do it), find its bad, (not so uncommon) get a good one off eBay as they are no longer available from Honda. I got one, can't tell it from new.   :D

Have the manual...built bike on my own with the manual...everything the manual suggests to do has been done... the only thing i can't spec out is the solid state rectifier/regulator to see if it went bad during the build... how can you test the rec/reg

I had this happen to me - turns out it was the wiring from the alternator to the main harness was worn and making poor contact resulting in no charge to the battery - pull your gear cover and check the connections behind it. I replaced that piece of wiring (available from Yamiya.com) and was good to go.

Check my thread here - page 3 half-way down

I pulled the cover and checked the wires...all was good there...while i was in there i ran a 12v source and ground to the coil and was getting a good reading from all 3 yellow wires....is it possible that with the discharge and recharge of the battery that i simply burnt out the regulator? i noticed it does not seem to heat up at all during operation.

Make sure the ground to the field coil is good to the frame. You need to follow the charging diagnostics in the Faqs section. If you just shotgun parts you could introduce more than the original problem.
