1977 K7 Restoration Project

Hello all, I am new to this site and also bike restoration, been going to do something like this for a long time and just recently came across an old Honda going cheap so I decided to by it.
Well, this is the bike I bought, a 77 K7. The bike is almost complete with just some minor parts missing. Needs full strip down

Yup, looks different than my '77 that I bought new.  Keep us informed on how it goes and have fun with it.

Looks like you've got a good project ahead of you, there. Is that a super trapp exhuast? Has the tank been burnt?

I would say that the engine has been worked on by the looks of it. Are you planning on tearing the engine down as well? It would be interesting to see what you find in there.

Started dismantling the bike, so far got it stripped down to bare frame and have got the engine out. Only a few surprises so far, found it had a Suzuki head light on it so I will be looking for a complete head light assembly, also found a large crack in the rear guard, again another hunt for spare parts. Hard to find stuff here in Australia but plenty in US but shipping costs are high. Anyway here are some more photos of my progress.

I think it looks like you have a hybrid - that sidecover looks like an F model..

can you give us the frame number, engine number too ??

compliance plate date ??

what did you pay for it ? if it's not too rude to ask... :)

I have original documents from first owner. It says bike is CB750 K7 year 1978.
Sold & first registered in 15/03/1980
Frame number is CB750K2738653
Engine Number CB750E2739574
under 1k

Well made it back out to the shed last night and started dismantling the engine, got as far as removing the cylinder and pistons. Looks like it has been bored to the max so will have to look around for a cylinder and pistons. Will read some more of the manual before starting on the rest. Things will have to wait for awhile I have to go away for work back end of next week, should have the frame back from blasting and painting, I can start to put something back together. Anyway here are some pic's of the engine.

Got back from central QLD last week and have now split the engine case, internals don't look to bad, will have to measure main & big end bearing clearances to see if they are ok.
Also had a go at polishing some ally parts, started with the front fork, have some pic's of before & after.
Do you guys put a clear coat on after polishing???
Anybody know where I can get a good rear guard (fender) for a K7

I have a 77f model that has a few "good" parts I know the headlight bucket is good along with the lamp. I'm in Cary, NC let me know.

Hi all, back at it again, been away for work don't seem to be able to get much time to work on the bike at the moment.
Got my frame back from blasting and painting and began reassembly
Motor is now completely stripped, I had the cases bead blasted and pressure cleaned.
There were some minor issues with the case main one being the small casting that the points plate bolts too was cracked off, I was lucky enough to get one of the welders at work to repair it for me.
Found a replacement cylinder on eBay that has standard bore, just waiting on parts to be delivered before reassembly of the engine.
One of the biggest problems is finding a new bearing for the transmission "6008 NR" can't buy them with the correct groove width, so I have bought one with thin groove and given it to local machine shop, they say they can machine it so here's hoping.

Back again, been away for work these past few months, which is ok as I have been waiting on some parts. Got some bits back from the chrome plater last week and l received my new front & rear rims + spokes, these have been laced now waiting on the tyres.
The frame has been assembled, got the triple tree in with new tapered bearings. Started putting back the wiring harness.
Got most parts now for the engine so will start on that in new year, have to go away again mid December but should be back for xmas.

Anyway here are some more progress photos.

There are mixed ideas on whether to clearcoat the aluminum forks and engine covers after you polish.  My personal preference is to not clearcoat.  That way I can polish them up easily if I ever need to without messing with the clearcoat.  I did my KO forks and covers last year and they are still spotless.  Nice work on your project...

Just got my new rims back from Ash's spoked Wheelz here in Brisbane. I got him to finish them off, I installed all of the spokes and got them as close as I could and he finished them off. He did a real good job only two days.
He also sprayed the inner rim with a high zinc rust proof coating, says he does it to all of his steel rims. You can see it in the photos.
Now I have to get some tyres

Had a chance to do some more work this week, Wiring harness is fitted along with indicators, Instruments and rectifier etc.
Also bought a new Bridgestone BT45 for the rear and had it fitted. Rear wheel is now in the bike.
Also drilled my front rotors have them fitted to the front rim with rim on bike, just to check clearances.
Have attached some more photos of the progress. Goal is to have it finished by end of July 2009

Next step is to rebuild the engine, I have most of the parts now, just waiting on my cylinder studs.

The car is my sons, it's a 1972 ford Mk2 2.ltr Escort, (Pinto Engine).
We are rebuilding it as well, the engine will be replaced with a Pinto fuel injected 2lt engine

It's been awhile since my last post, been way for work. I have media blasted the engine cases and steam cleaned them. They have been painted with VHT "New Cast Aluminum" and baked in an oven for two hrs as per intructions. Hope to start assembly of the engine in the next few weeks, going away again Monday for a few weeks for work but after that should be home for awhile.

Here are some picks of the cases mountd in an engine stand I made from scrap box section.

Looking good. 

Did you do the steam cleaning prior to blasting or after?  I've not looked into steam cleaning engine parts, but I recently read some articles about building a steam cabinet for wood window sashes to remove glazing and 100 years of old paint.

Maybe I'll build it big enough for engine cases and windows  ::)

G'Day Joe, I media blasted the high pressure water cleaned and then steam cleaned just to make sure
any residue from media blasting was cleaned out. I also blew out all oil galleries with compressed air.

Did some more assembly, the engine cases are together now. Used Dynoman main bearing and cylinder studs. Can't do much more for awhile, I am away again for work for the next week or so and also waiting cylinder to be bored out.
Stripped the right hand control switch and bead blasted the housing, will paint it on my return. Also trying to find Krylon fusion plastic paint here in oz so if anyone knows where to get it can you let me know.
