Topic: New Toy ! Updated !#$%!@#! PO

Finally have me my own 750. Been looking for a year now.  $450   '72CB750  20k on the odometer. Numbers seem appropriate for original.  - Not currently running.  Gonna pick up a new battery, plugs.  Got the carbs off and soaking in some Simple Green.  Going to give some "Rubber Renue" a try on the carb boots before ordering any new ones...  Came with some new throttle cables, so I'll put those on while I'm in there.  Change the oil & filter while I'm at it as well.  Been sitting for 4 years now...gotta get some new tires but I'm just gong to try and get it running this weekend.  Unfortunately, the tank has been kremed, doesn't look like a good job, so I'll probably have to address that soon.  Petcock looks good and clean...carbs should clean up fine.  Hopefully she'll fire up easily.  Going to have to rebuild the master cylinder & caliper....almost stuck - not quite.
Anything I'm missing that's easy to remedy ?

UPDATE:
***while cleaning the carbs, I discovered that the PO has cracked the post that the main jet threads into...not too badly - It still threads easily, but I'm worried that it will leak from the crack.   Anybody ever try a bit of teflon tape ?  Bad idea / good idea ?  should I just hunt down some new carbs and be done with it ?  Gotta order some bowl gaskets for it and was thinking about getting some new jets & needles while I'm at it.

I might even resist the urge to cafe this one.  The chrome and pipes (341's) are in really good shape.  Somewhere along the line it has been cleaned up a bit...  Dangit I wish I didn't have to work today & tomorrow.

Nice deal!  Looks good.  I'd check the points and possibly order some while you're at it.  One less thing to worry about.

while you have the carbs off, take out the slow jets. they are notorious to be plugged. I run a fine piece of wire through mine. static check the time, if you want, set the valves. A good hot battery, clean jets and good timing and I bet it will run. good luck and keep us posted.

I agree with the rest of our group.  Looks like an excellent deal for you.  Those pipes are worth more than you paid for the entire bike.  Be sure to check the float level as long as you have the carbs apart.  And if the tank is as bad as you think, you may not want to run gas from that tank into your clean carbs or you can start that clean up again.  I agree with you...to nice to cafe.  Let us know how she starts...

IMO, it's the worst of all the tank sealers i've seen. none of them want an improperly prepared substrate, but either there are a lot of idiots out there (ok, that's true anyway) or kreem is particularly finicky, because i've seen quite a few tanks ruined from the stuff.

I've never actually had ANY experience good or bad w/ Kreme, but just looking at the inside of the tank, it appears rough - even with the Kreme in there, leading me to believe that the prep work wasn't done as I would have liked it to be.  And after reading countless threads about liners etc, I've determined that I want a tank that is unlined. 
 But, I'm going to give it a chance.....just to get it running.   I'll have to paint the tank anyway.  I'll completely strip it at that time and address any pinholes etc that may pop up.

Spikey, if It turns out I need points I'll definitely take you up on your offer.  I only wish I had some parts to contribute to your phoenix.  That thing grew on me.  Can't wait to see what's next.

I'd be worried about crud in the tank clogging your carbs.  At very least, throw some degreaser and hot water in there, slosh it around and see what comes out.  Absolutely put an inline filter in before you open the petcock.  Fastest way I know of to ruin an evening is to realize that you clogged your freshly cleaned jets with rust and debris from a non-cleaned tank. (don't ask me how I know)

I have bars and controls installed. as well as new turn signals and tail lights.
I am working on the wiring now.  When I get that finished (this weekend??) I will mount the carbs and pipes, and try to start it. 
Then I still need to true the wheels and get a chain.  Then timing and carb sync. 
One of these days i will take pics and put it in the project thread, but this is the boring part, you did all of the cool stuff.

Well.....it's more of a brown than green...   I'm thinking of the Candy sunrise orange, or a transparent rootbeer w/ correct stripes...  could go either way

i recently sealed a old fiberglass tank with a product from Caswell.

i ended up having to use the whole amount to ensure that all surface was coated.  the stuff is a little too thick to use sparingly.  it just wouldn't coat all of the tank unless i had a good amount in there.  It now looks like there is a extremely thick coat of clear coat inside the tank. worked for me.

Carbs.....!    PO had broken one of the posts that holds the main jet.  Not a bad crack, the jet still threads in and seems to seat pretty well.  But...it still has a visible crack.  Was thinking of using a tiny piece of teflon tape wrapped around the jet before re-installing as a cheap measure...probably on the lookout for some new carbs or just that one.  It's either the number 1 or 4....can't remember - need to go take a look again with fresh eyes.

If you try the tape, make sure it is suitable for petro chemicals. I "think" it's the blue tape. The white is for plumbing and would likely disolve.

Don't be too hard on the PO just yet, these old carb bodies are quite fragile and made of crappy aluminum and not to mention really old. Looking for a replacement would be a good idea, I would worry that tape would come off and cause all kinds of problems, if you just need one carb body someone here probably has one, post a requst on he parts wanted board

what style carbs ? i have some 022A's i could part with . not sure if the 750 used that style
