Battery maint - Did I kill my first non-sealed battery?
« on: February 29, 2008, 09:40:13 AM »
Sorry, I'm young enough that I haven't had to deal with adding water to my batteries before, and I'm pretty sure I killed all or most of the water in my battery with my non-smart trickle charger.

Can it be refilled with water and good to go?  Can I take it to battery plus and get it restarted or is it time for a new battery?

If so - what are the sealed batteries that are preferred?  I seem to have managed to drain my battery several times this year by leaving the key in, ignition in the wrong position, harness short etc and my el cheapo trickle charger doesn't seem to be good for it.

Thanks.

That battery is gone judging by your statements. Get a Battery Tender or similiar unit (there are lots of different ones now). Even with the Tender you still have to monitor the H2O level. I've used Yuasa and Exide (Exide owns Yuasa). They will all be destroyed if completely discharged multiple times.

How old is the battery?  More than 3 or 4 years then dump it.  I had a 2 year old battery that was in a restoration project that had 1/2 inch of water in the bottom.  I figured it was free to try to save it.  I just added water and used my Battery Tender Plus charger and wha-la it has been good for the 1st year.  As far as the sealed, I have a Westco in my Wing.  I wanted the same for my 750KO, but they did not make any sealed that I could find that would fit in the battery box.  But if you don't want to get stranded, then buy a new battery and a Battery Tender Plus.

Just refill the battery with distilled water and leave it on your trickle charger for a long long time. Monitor the battery temperature and make sure the distilled water stays topped off. Theres a chance to save it like this, its less extreme than flushing the battery but its alot easier and slightly cheaper.

Of course you can just go get a new battery, thats easier.

Yes. They are good. Is there a size that fits well Mark. I never really explored it.
