Need help with size of box wrench (CB750K1)
« on: March 01, 2008, 03:44:51 PM »
My bike didn't come with the original toolkit. For some time I was trying to buy one at decent price on eBay but I gave up. I found later that Honda still have it, but when I wanted to order it my local Honda dealer told me: "are you nuts? the factory tools are crap and expensive. Just get the same tools in decent quality for a quarter of the price."

Said and done. There are no 8-12 available, but you can get two combination (open-box) wrenches of 8 and 12 for about 3 euro, and so on. You can get a more-than-decent toolkit for about 20 euro ($30), including pliers, screwdriver with bits, and even an emergency set of control calbes.

Problem comes with the box wrench. The parts manual don't mention the size, and by the picture it seems there are two sizes. Can somebody tell me which sizes are they? I guess one is 26, for the rear axle nut.

FWIW, wrenches 17 and 19 doesn't fit in the small tray. I just plan to cut them in half, and then use the spark plug wrench as a handle. Nevertheless, they are suppoused to be emergency tools, but after all, when you are in an emergency is when you really need good tools.

so where can you get a 26mm box wrench for the rear axle nut? Thats the one that I really would like to have onboard.

The Honda ones came I think in 2 styles.. axle only and one that had 2 sizes (2nd hole turns the nut on the points end of crank for point setting & static timing).. I can not imagine these are that hard to find, are used with extension sleeve..

but
...

they are smaller and thinnner than ANYTHING else you will find to replace them..they are also 6 point, which is better.

They ONLY thing I ever used on a bike from the Honda kit is the plug wrench & the axle /ign wrench..

I have an axle wrench with extension on another of my bikes and it is useless, there is no way to get enough leverage to loosen it. So I rather carry a good one or nothing at all. In fact, I don't know whether there is 26 box wrench but I suspect there is.

The same goes for the other wrenches. Factory ones are a little loose fit and I feel they can ruin a nut if it is tight. I rather carry a box wrench, with the other end open for those places where you need it that way.

So, anybody have the wrench around to check the dimension?

Raul, It's 23 and 26mm for the axle/crank wrench. With the extension added the length is about 11" and it does a good job for its intended uses.
I've added a proper 12mm combination wrench to the tool kit for on the road chain adjustments. The open end spanner provided did round off the adjuster locknots.

According to my manual:

Yes, the tools are poor quality, but that's what came with the bike. Are you buying the toolkit for the sake of making the bike "complete", or so you will be able to make repairs if your bike breaks down (which you would need "real" tools for)?

Raul, here is a tip..

The wheel wrench is designed for the bike... so if you cant remove it.. you are too tight.. that is what it is telling you. There is no point in carrying the wrench if it will not work & it is designed to work.

Just like a car , dont let a tireshop airimpact your wheelnuts so hard that you cant change a tire..

When I had my shop I frequently saw overtightened axles.

The stock 12mm or 14mm I will not use on the chain adjusters

To Jonesy and Bryan, I first intended to buy the original toolkit for the sake of originality. They command a high price, many times more expensive than buying from Honda!!! -still available-. Now, it is not even worth it to buy it secondhand -thanks for the advice Bryan anyway- because, no matter how cheap you buy it, the shipping will kill me to the point that it will be almost the same price as buying from the Honda dealer.

Facing the decision to spend $80 in a toolkit that nobody will see but me, I just thought that the advice from my Honda dealer made complete sense. I just want to gather a toolkit with good tools in case of emergency, because I already have good tools in the shop. The open end wrenches in original toolkits seem very flimsy to me, and in most of the cases, if a good box-end wrench ruin a nut it is because the nut is soft and tight, not because of the wrench. That's what usually happens with the inspection covers for the tapped adjusters. A tight fit, a soft aluminium for the nut and an open end wrench and you have a recipe for disaster.

I only use the torque wrench for the head nuts. For the rest I use my "common sense" torque wrench so I don't usually overtighten nuts or bolts, much less when they have a split pins to keep them from breaking loose like in the axle bolt.

When I have the toolkit complete I will post some pictures as well as the total price. Kevin, thanks a lot for the info. 23 and 26, note in the wallet for the next time I go to the hardware store....

Thanks guys!!!!!
