tappets .002 or .02 difference in my manual

Ok, I have conflicted info coming from HONDA manuals.
When setting tappet clearance - one book has the Intake as:  .002 inches  and the Exhaust as .003 inches
The other book has the Intake as.02 inches and the Exhaust as .03 inches.   What a difference a decimal place makes...
Anyone care to split the tie ?

where did you get your tappet feelers ?  The smallest I have on mine is .008 in     Are these a specialty motorcycle item?
Or should I be able to find these at Sears / AutoParts stores etc.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

I REALLY hope that that is a typo!!!!!!
.002 sounds more like it.

You CAN run with more clearances.... but i wouldn't recommend it.

Definately .002 and .003.  All of my books say this.

Re: the feeler, look for an ignition feeler set.  Don't remember where I bought mine but it's Excel/Kastar brand.  Has very thin gauges, including some that are brass I believe.  Steel ones go from .030 down to .0015 and brass ones are .016 to .006

Make sure you're using the right values on the feelers also.  They may be marked only in standard or metric.

.08 standard = .003 metric
.05 standard = .002 metric

Wait.  Strike that. Reverse it.  Thanks mystic for catching that.  That'd confuse him for sure.

.002 and .003 are inch measurements.

the metric values in the book are .05mm and .08mm

my gauges are .002in/.051mm and .003in/.076mm

.002mm would be VERY thin indeed lol :)

0.02" is twenty thou, way too big.(unless you wan the valve tips beaten in?) The correct clearance is two thousandths of inch intake and three thousandths of inch exhaust ( same on ALL screw and locknut Honda's from about 1970~1978 including the later models-XR/XL100/110/125/185/200 etc)

That is ..Hondas with Stock camshafts.

If you at all suspect.. or just for kicks.. cuz you only get one chance at this.. check them before you adjust and write them down.. that way if you do have a lumpystick you at least have a general idea what they should be. Once you adjust them you are hooped.. I know of sohc,s where no one knows what the clearances should be, they are just plain guessing!!

To hear mine run you would not believe they are at .012 but it has a long duration..
