Coil Replacement Time
« on: March 22, 2013, 07:28:14 AM »
It's time to replace the already non-stock coils on my 74 CB550 and after reading around it seems like a compatible choice would be the Dyna 5.0 Ohm Coils DC8-1.  http://www.z1enterprises.com/ItemDetails.aspx?itemDescription=Dyna+Dual+Output+5.0+Ohm+Coils+%28pair%29+DC8-1&item=DYDC8-1

The plan is to use them with my points and eventually the HondaMan ignition. I already have a set of NGK 5Kohm caps and am planning on using them with some 7mm copper core wire.

Does this setup sound pretty compatible or am I missing something?

Yeah they will work with your stock setup and more importantly for the little more anemic charging system they won't draw more current than stock

You could always get new stock coils for like 35$ per or the 30$ aftermarket ones and use a ballast resistor

Round top carbs w/ 38 pilots, middle needle position, airscrew 7/8ths out, 122 main jet
Stock airbox w/ drop in K&N, Hooker 4-1

Don't trust me alone with a claw hammer and some pliers

The Dyna 5 ohm units are a great replacement for our machines.  The 5 ohm coils don't tax the weak charging system and the coils allow cable replacement without coil replacement.

I did EXACTLY what you are planning, HM unit included, on my '74 550 and it works GREAT. Stay that course and you will be pleased.

That's great to hear!  ;D

I am expecting to get them on Tuesday (Z1 Enterprise has fast shipping AND a great price.)

Did crimping the wires prove to be a challenge? I didn't order the crimping tool and am hoping to use some plies/tools I have on hand.
