brake line

i want to order a single ss brake line from my mc to my caliper. does anyone know where to buy one in the correct length? or do you just have to measure and get something custom made? this is going on a 1972 cb500, clubman bars, modern mc, stock forks and single caliper. and if i do have to get something made, what length should i get? this bike didnt have a front brake when i bought it

Because your bars and master may differ from others, it's best you measure yourself. Fiqure out the best route for the line and I use a piece of 1/4" hose or the like to work out the length, then measure the hose afterwards. I've been happy with parts & service from Spiegler.(www.spieglerusa.com)

I had them put specific angled banjo fittings on mine.  I also had them put a special fitting on the caliper end to eliminate the short piece of steel pipe that comes on the 550.

ok thats what im looking for. i want to run a line straight from the MC to the caliper eliminating the steel line and the brake switch fitting. i just dont want to end up buying a line for $50 bucks or more just to find out i ordered the wrong length, or the wrong angle of banjo fitting.

You can use a banjo bolt directly into the hole for the hard line fitting, it's a normal banjo thread (either 10x1.25 or 10x1.5, you can try the caliper banjo and see if that goes). You may need to shorten the banjo, there is a steel flare seat pressed in at the bottom of the fitting hole that limits thread depth. You can also drill out that seat pretty easily if you want to modify the caliper. You may need 2 crush washers beneath the banjo fitting as well, so the fitting doesn't interfere with the little lip around the hole.

Here is a pic of the special caliper fitting offered by Spiegler.  I kept the center switch block just in case I opt to run dual disks at some point.  The theory being that I can add a second caliper hose with a double banjo bolt on the output of the switch block.

As for length, someone mentioned above using some tubing to follow your hose route.  Sounds like a good plan to me.  Be sure to try the tubing with the handle bars at both extremes.  I'd then add maybe 3 or 4 inches just to be safe.

Does your modern master have a switch to activate your brake light or are you planning to use an integrated banjo bolt?

good info oldschool. i havent purchased the mc yet. but im planning to get on off of ebay. pics of it have been posted on here before. it has a switch built into it. spiegler and helusa sound like the popular ones. has anyone tried a place called Charlies Place? i called and asked them about brake lines and they said they make them custom made with a 2 day turn around. for me they are just a short drive away. http://www.charlies-place.com/
