Choke questions/problems...750F
« on: August 06, 2005, 05:17:16 PM »
...so lately my 78 750F seeems very hard to start when cold.  I know, I know these bikes are cold natured, but it takes like 2 or 3 minutes of turnning the motor over before it will start, and its not always been this way.  Also today I noticed when starting it [after sitting all week] after a minute or so oh turning over with the choke on, I shut the choke off, and it was like it was popping more (like it wanted to start) with the choke off rather than on!  Where do I start investigating this...thanx in advance..

Pulling the choke closes off the air and adds extra fuel (77-78 carbs). After you do this for a minute without the engine starting your cylinders fill with a lot of gas but not enough air to combust it. Close the choke at this point and you allow more air into the mix making it more combustible.

On cold mornings I "prime" the engine by turning the kill switch to the OFF position and hit the starter button while giving the throttle a couple twists. Then turn kill switch to ON position and start bike normally.

it takes like 2 or 3 minutes of turnning the motor over before it will start, and its not always been this way.
Sounds to me like either a weak spark/igniton or your pressed in slow jets and passages might be getting gunked up.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

...can I get to the pressed in jets without pulling the carbs completely apart?

Carbs have to come off to get at every thing, but only the float bowls need to be removed to reach the slow jets. Heres what I've done with marginal success:

Remove idle mixture screws being careful to note how spring, washer?, o-ring assemble on the needle. Spray copious amounts of carb cleaner through the slow jets, mixture passages, and the small jets pressed in to the air intake(two at bottom of intake where air box connects to the carbs). Blow out with compressed air and reassemble.

Some people have been able to remove the slow jet with pliers, but I've had no luck with that. You can try poking a single strand of wire through the slow jet, but be careful not to break the wire :'(

If you smell a lot of gas, then you know you are flooded too.

The 77 - 78 carbs are very close. They should work the same with the slow jets being pressed in. I however have never gotten my jets out and I dont thing you need to if you use a carb cleaning tool.

I don't have a choke on my K7 (PO made his own linkage). and I've had no trouble.
Two twists of the throttle & she starts. Adjust the idle with the big knob (?) until she's warm & that's it.
Got down to 1 degree cel last night & she still started.
