Replacing a Gas Tank on a 78
« on: August 06, 2005, 12:01:27 PM »
question. i have a 1978 CB750.  Gas tank is a big one, i think 6 gallons. Since the bike fell over, and it put a golf ball size dent in the gas tank, and i dont like the color of the tank anyways, someone painted it a while ago, so its not the original color, can i replace this tank with a smaller tank from a 70-76?, If so, what other changes will have to take place, other than replacing the tank (seat moved? ect).

The main difference, beyond the petcock location is the length.  If you were to mount a pre-'77 tank, there will be a 3" or more 'gap' between the tank and seat.  I have a '78 750K and a tried my buddy's '75 tank and it looked pretty silly.  Moving the seat would only over-expose the rear fender section, also lookinf kinda siilly.

Since I went with a '70's Tracy body, I have an available '78 Tank.  It is original purple and I have the key and the petcock is intact.  There is what appears to be ''liquid weld' applied to the rear bottom of both sides and someone sprayed a thin stripe of black paint to cover it.  It has never leaked and the inside is in decent shape.  I'll post some pics of you are interested.

I'll get some digital pics tonight, the Tank is at my buddy's shop.  Sadly the side covers were sold back in January.

I built a little web page with the pics and descriiption.  Let me know if you are intersted.  If not, I'll throw it on to the "Parts for Sale" forum or maybe eBay.  Here is the link,
