1975 SS left-hand control cross reference?
« on: March 03, 2008, 01:36:34 PM »
I dropped my bike into the side of my shed a while ago on the left side, and my mirror caught the weight, breaking off the threaded hole that is attached to the clutch lever and left hand controls. I need to buy a new set of controls in order to facilitate the use of that mirror; do you guys know which years will fit my '75 Supersport? Thanks for helping!

Which 75 SS? New 75 750F left control is no longer available. 76/77 550F and 75/76 750F are the same part.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Sorry, I forgot to specify! 750, but as you say, the part's no longer available. Thanks for your clarification. I am going to search Ebay for it, I think.

If you find a NOS unit but don't want to pay the price either let me know or grab it and I'll send you a "slightly" used one plus some $$ to boot in trade. Serious offer.

If I can't find one (and I've been watching for 2 years) I may try to adapt one from a 77/78 750K model. These may be recently discontinued also but there are still some NOS out there. The exterior looks identical but the wiring is different. We could always possibly use the exterior but either swap all the guts in order to have correct wiring or just splice the wiring. I know the 77/78K wiring has a connector block that our's doesn't and I'm not sure about the lengths of each wire. Also one of the wires is a different color but that doesn't really matter.

Anyone have an old or useless 77/78 750K left hand control we can experiment with ??

I think I have a 77/78 K leftside in nice condition.. too nice to butcher up.. I know I probably have a faded 74 K one, I think they are close..after 73 they went to on/off on one side & beam selection on the other.

I just adapted one from a K model, you just have to replace the wiring with the wires from your old one, and and cut a relief for the wires to come out under the handlebar.

The left hand control on my '75 750F is the same as the one thats on my 550's and 750's, if that helps you in your search....
Good Luck!

JTB,

Was the wiring swap a simple "screw in" kinda thing? Assuming you used one with the hi/lo switch, did you use an earlier one K3 to K6 or a later one ie K7/K8 (77/78)? When you mention "cut a relief for the wires to come out under the handlebar I'm assuming the wires still go through the bars and you modded the inside of the control? Next question for you and 754 would be is your switch labeled  HM-14QB-T (to determine whether or not the housings are identical but perhaps just different wiring) ?  Sorry about being so anal but I'm trying to avoid more $$ and parts I can't use plus I'm sure others are/will be in the same situation and we need to further our cause  ;)

I assume he NOTCHED the lower housing to AVOID running wires thru the bars.

I posted a while back to Id the77/78 swich i had and it had a square plug on the end.

I reread the post.. easy fix... clamp the mirror to the bar with a mirror clamp..easy to make if need be.. then clean up the switch housing.. not the nicest looking but a 40 min fix with no downtime..

Rxman,  The 77 & 78 F's have exposed wires from the switches instead of running through the bars.  754 is correct, I cut a notch for the  wires to exit and run along the bars.

I changed wires because the older switch had all bullet connectors, and the F has a four post spade connector.  I just took them all out, and put the others in.  There is a locating pin in the bottom half of the switch which has to be pulled out.  Other than that, piece 'o cake.

JTB,

Thanks for the info. I didn't know the 77/78F are external wired  and have the connector like the 77/78Ks do. The 75/76F wires run through the bars. Looks like I'll be doing the reverse of what you did. Does your 77/78F switch housing have HM-14QB-T cast into the outside like the 75/76F?

Cool....  Housings are identical but the wiring is different. That's an easy fix/swap in that case. That's good information for those that are trying to be correct.

(I left out the B in the HM-14QB-T in my previous posts but I modified and corrected them)

I looked at a few housings today..3 actually.. they were QB

The later version off the 77 had a square plug and the letters were cast in the side you are viewing.. switch side..

What I really disliked about 75 and up Honda was the Safety Nazis took over.. no thanks to Joan Claybrook.. >:(

And that brought us crap like shift pattern in the trans cover, and on the late style switch I saw 77.. they actually added in orange letters..TURN  for the Signals.. and LIGHTS I think for the ON/OFF for the lights.. good thing they reminded us..
