Topic: Surging -VESPA Sprint 150cc

So I started my girlfriends Vespa 150cc after a long winter (stored with misting oil and marvel mystery in gas)....after a few kicks in fired up and idled easily.....put, put, put.....so off I went for a spin round the block....I would accelerate then it would die, roll of the throttle and it would surge into life, rev up, die, roll off throttle, surge forward etc etc....

So Im guessing its fuel related....sound like a blocked jet perhaps or could it be something else? Thoughts welcome!

I guess it is like the old joke, riding a scooter -moped- is like boning a fat chick. It is fun as long as your friends don't see you...

It is a two stroker, innit? If it has reed valves check that one is not stuck -I have not much idea about two strokers but hey, if nobody else chime in I will look like an expert!!!!

Don't listen to Raul, Vespa's are cool.  Sounds like fuel starvation of a sort.  Is there a vent in the gas cap that might need to be opened?  Or maybe a clogged fuel filter.  It sounds just like my Trail 70 when I forget to open the vent in the fuel cap.

On my Grandpas Honda 50cc scooter it was the Air filter that needed cleaning.  It may not be pure fuel issues.  Maybe it's clogged by dust and/or spider webs from sitting so long? It performed much like you are saying.

and It's cheap and easy to fix!

Raul dont worry I took the scooter out AFTER taking my cafe K2 out for its first Spring ride in 32F weather :-) Then clad in black leather pants, black jacket and black helmet with tinted visor I took the pink scooter out....it was fun! (well until it started surging on me  )....here is the scooter last summer....

Old style Vespa two strokes were rotary valve (they use one of the flywheels and a hole in the crankcase)
 kind of a neat idea.
Its a really simple carb and very easy to get to so its no big deal to remove and clean it.
The only engine I have ever had carb trouble with is my generator.
Its also the only one I ever put Sta-Bil in, so, I'm convinced that is the problem (still sucks, it needs a new carb now)

Looks like there might be room to squeeze your spare 750 engine in there. then just add rear-sets and clip-ons, and you're good...

I know why the bike was surging. It was your manhood you lost getting clogged in the air filter.....

Dont you worry Raul (and Ed) Im VERY confident in my manliness....if one was to get so insecure by riding a pink scooter then you really have problems....clearly having a deep Scottish accent helps as well  .....Spanish accents on the other hand.....something to do with all that flamenco dancing and eating little dainty plates of food (i.e. tapas)

Now with that picture of your cute girlfriend you've gained points in my book. Nevertheless, I'll keep that picture of you on your Vespa so when my kid grow old I can show him which kind of people he must run away from.....



Hijacking mode off, how about that #$%*ty gas preserver you poured in the gastank? Two strokers run with lower compression, maybe you should empty the tank and try with clean gas. You can always use that gas in any of your 4-strokers.

FWIW, I have a Puch moped at my in-laws that I bought for about 60 euro, only to ride it when I go there. Provided the gas mileage -180 mpg or so-, the gas in the tank must be 5 or 6 years old, already mixed with oil.

It always start at the second or third kick. Unbeliveable. Don't waste your money on gas preserver with two strokers.

Well you see Raul, being the International Man that I am, Ive found that women, no matter what country they are from, appreciate a man with a sensitive side  ....or perhaps its just the accent ;-)

Bullcrap. They like sensitive men, but they go to bed with the bad, tatooed, rock musicians and evil doers.

You are right in one thing. They tend to like men from abroad. You must be the ugliest italian ever born, but you sure have chances to pick up a girl in Spain. The accent and the fact that dating him will set her above her ordinary friends is definitely a plus.

I love old Vespas and Lambrettas, but honestly I wouldnt ride one that color.
