Hey Gues What! I'm an Idiot!
« on: March 04, 2008, 04:02:36 PM »
So, after all that talk about tires, I ordered the Avon Roadrider:

http://www.americanmototire.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=33_61_75

Great price, getting good reviews across the Web. But, I made a wee mistake: This tire seems to be tubeless. @#$%!.

Now, to be fair, there is NOWHERE on Americanmototire.com where it says that, but I still should have done my research. DAMMIT!

So, uhm, you think I can just throw this tire on and put a tube underneath it?

Did you have to do anything to them, or did you just throw the tire on top of the tube per usual?

Just mount as usual.  The main difference is that it's said that running a tube in a tubeless tire will reduce the speed rating by one increment, but I'm sure that Avon is rated for much higher sustained speeds than most sohc's can achieve.

Since mist of the modern syle tires are tubeless, we all run them with tubes. Only thing is when you are mounting them be sure to use some slippery soapy water. The beads are much more robust than the tubeless beads. They are a bit rougher to lever on. The slicker the better is the rule.

soapy water has a down-side: Rust.  talcum powder avoids that problem.  Be sure your spoke strip is in good shape.

I'm running Bridgestones that I was hoping to go tubeless.  My mechanic couldn't get the inflater to seal correctly so he asked me if he could throw tubes in em.  He raced 750F's back in the day so I trust his judgement.

2,500 trouble free miles on them.

I run RoadRiders with tubes in 'em on my 750F, without a problem...like everyone has said, you can run the tubeless tires with a tube in them... :)

Same here. The tube lowers the Avon speed rating from 149 to about 135mph. You'll never notice the difference ;)

One thing that I know, is that whenever I'm riding any one of my bikes, stock or not, I sometimes like to hang my feet on the passenger pegs, for a change in position. I think that If I put my signals there, I'd probably wind up busting one off while I'm searching for and flipping down that folded up peg.... ;) But they look cool... 8)

If you do carry a passenger, isn't the heel of whatever shoe/boot they are wearing going to obscure the signal?

HAHAHA.....

Don't ride like that in Utah....(freiggin' religious nutz..... )

A neighbor of mine got pegged for runnin' headers(no muffler), turn signals not in view, obstructed view of brake signal light, no running light for the liscense plate, no insurance, speeding, no not registered, on and on and on....
About 800 in fines.
Mind you, he was driving a un-stamped/not registered custom frame(he had the bill of sale) with no plates or safety inspection certification.
Awesome 750 however!

You might want to make sure those turn signals are legit being mounted that far from the back of your tire.
Might obscure the view of them, would hate to see anyone pay the man anything not needed from ticket(s).

However... they look nice there!!

i like it.  Just make sure you've got the bike set up to out-run any possible tickets.  I recommend adding a turbo with nitrous. ;D

Most states do not actually require turn signals on motorcycles, and many that do require them waive that requirement for bikes built before 1985 :)

Totally off topic, but that was an interesting list of laws.

Of interest to me:
