Rarity? - CB750P (K2 Police special)
« on: March 02, 2008, 03:25:51 AM »
Does anyone know much about these? It's a K2 Police Special that were originally used by the Japanese Police.

I'm guessing they're kinda rare? There's one for sale on eBay in Australia for $5500 if anyone is interested.     Item number: 180219608955

I'm mad keen myself, but without a real garage (apartment dweller), I can't keep another bike.  Do they actually have P engine and frame numbers, that would make them pretty rare, if they did?

Found some info in another thread.

saw that listing, does look like a great buy...
only problem i can see is the auction quotes it as a one owner, then he goes on to say that it was bought by the officer that rode it, and it doesnt sound like the seller is him....
So i would say at least three owners, not one...
What else has he got wrong or lied about?
cheers

Is there any information on whether the P models had a better cam or anything?

I had a 76 Montreal 750 P.

Not sure what the serial # had, if it was P or not but parts book uses the P model for their parts.

I finally sold it after a lot of effort for 400.00 I think.

It was without a doubt...the SLOWEST, most piglish, boring and did I mention slow 750 I ever rode.

I did manage to ride it to Sturgis and back..about2600 miles..it was embarrasingI was riding with a few other bikes and if there was a headwind I could not keep it at 70mph.

It had the cop speedo, aftermarket bags, floorboars, and a butt bucket toring seat, and it was black.

In full police trim I think they would be sort of cool but they are not quick...and I dont think valuable..

I would think it was in poor tune. For any 750 to have a problem going 70mph there is something wrong with either low compression, bad valves, carbs out of adjust, or timing out of adjust.  I can't imagine why it would be any slower just because it was a Police Special.

The ad claims top speed as 110 mph.

What all did the Ps have that were different from the other K bikes? Just wondering since ideally i would like to get another K chassis and build a P replica.

Will 750s go faster than 70 mph when only running on three cylinders?

they look cool. i've always thought of making a military style 750, with ammo case hard bags, and drab olive paint on everything, kind of like the WWII harleys or the military bullet enfield still produces. i think a cb750 needs a rifle rack.  ;D

I never inferred it was slower because it was a cop bike...just relaying that it was very slow.. and yes I think it did have more power when it was fresh...a LOT MORE..

But do I think a P had engine mods.. now way..

I have read the 71  & down parts book a dozen times & any P part listed is external of the motor..

Back to the cop slug... I ride it before I bought it and figured..well i tune it up and it will be crisper... Sad to say but I think it already had been.. Hate to have ridden it before hand!! :o

But to be objective here, I did not say that it had trouble doing 70mph,I did say it had trouble MAINTAINING 70 MPH in a HEADWIND... HUGE difference especially if you are on a steep grade.. If you have toured a bit you probably have noticed that often you will have a headwind the better part of a day..

BTW the 3 HD,s I was riding with had little trouble holding the speed.. which led to me and one other rider falling back.we all ended up in Livingston MT that night.however the 2 guys ahead of us went straight to the bar.. and that is where Peter Fonda bought them a beer!! :o

So some days you DONT meeet the nicest people on a Honda.. its a MYTH.. ???

First things first, that bike is rare enough to deserve to be collectible. I would get it even if I had no space available; you can sort that out later. Get it when it is still available?

Previous owners? Does it really matter? C'mon, it has been a police bike. It may have been ridden by tens of different officers with different riding styles. The odometer may very well have crossed zero twice. It is asking for an engine rebuild so it really doesn't matter much its previous life.

Regarding the bike laziness, I should have to check with the parts manual, but it would be possible that public services bikes had different camshafts and compression ratios. You don't want a police officer to ride a sporty bike, otherwise they will wear the bike down in no time. You want a rugged, bulletproof -no pun intended- bike for the patrolling tasks. After all, there are not many police chases so you don't really need a high performance bike in your day to day.
