Clutch Basket Noise.( My right foot is afraid of my bike!)
« on: August 07, 2005, 12:08:05 AM »
Yes I know you Greenspun Guys have seen this hashed to death.  I am looking for the final answer.  What can be done to reduce this clatter!  I have adusted it from min to max with no change.  What is worn out? Can I just shove cash inside the cover to shut it up.  At idle with the clutch out I want to run, not just the people on the side walk.  Help needed.

These wonderful little birds are great flyers, delicious eating, excellent for training your hunting dog, and just fun to shoot,or stuff and keep around the house.  Bobwhites can be put with other types of Quail and have very large penis's.  Quail are very popular with the babes.

Check your inner hub as well as the fiber clutch plate tabs for wear. I'd start there.

When you drop the clutch, how well does it grab? If there is slipping, that could indicate something is really worn. I think the headmaster has it. Maybe check your springs too to make sure one did not somehow break!

The "B" plate from a Goldwing clutch or from a 77 and up supersport will make it quit rattling.

It helps eliminate chatter when engaging the clutch. His bike should have it already.

The chatter arises from the plates slipping in the basket and rattling against the tabs.  This gets louder as the tabs are worn down, which may also wear notches in the basket as well.  When I pulled the basket off my Ducati is was very chewed up, but that is a dry clutch and is much louder with out the oil to muffle the noise.  The rock tumbler beside your right foot can be quieted with cash, to be sure.  You just need to replace the clutch, and possibly the basket, and you will reduce the noise, if not eliminate it completely.  Of course, you could just shove $100 bills in between the tabs and basket, and that should button the problem entirely! :D

can you buy an aftermarket complete clutch assembly?

Not that I know of. Like I said before I would take the assembly out and carefully inspect all the parts. The basket doesn't wear much at all because it is steel. My biggest complaint about the basket is it is heavy. The kickstarter gear is OK? How many miles on the clutch plates?? Offhand I'd say replace the fibers with OEM parts( no Barnett stuff), check the steels and replace the OEM springs with Barnett springs. I can't remember the stack height for the plates but it sounds like yours are shot.

When you take the plates out, be very careful of the order in which they come out.
Unless you're the original owner there is a big chance that the set up is not standard.

I am owner #4.  The clutch is strong no slipping even if I really slip it taking off then torque on it with full throttle.  She will burn rubber if you dump the clutch.

I don't like the clutch plates. I've had many problems with the stack height with the extra plate kits.....they  are simply too thick. I've also found what seems to me to be alot of clutch material in the oil after running their fibers. I do like the springs and have used them many, many times on many different types of bikes. The folks at Barnett are nice and helpful as they have helped me cross reference springs if I wanted something a little lighter or heavier. I think OEM plates are the best whetehr you are dragracing, roadracing or street riding.

Odd, I'm not doubting MRiek, but my Barrett plates have worked great.

Good to know, MRieck.  I have used Barnett plates in a dry clutch setup on a Ducati before, but have never tried their clutch on a wet clutch.  I am due for a new clutch around 50,000mi, and I will be sure to use the stock plates. ;)

I just figured out your problem. The Po used used the basket as a rock tumbler! ;D

It is certainly heavy enough to serve that purpose! ;)

I got time to dig out my carb syncro tool from my english car days of yor, bought some mercury ( I thought you could'nt send that in the mail?)  The noise level dropped to a clatter (like one or two the rats with hammers, still wanted out) but for the most part it is a lot better.  I plan to pull the clutch pack (flywheel #2) this weekend and take a peek.
