cb 360 please help
« on: August 09, 2005, 06:19:53 PM »
ok, got the cam chain on and enough room with the tensioners out to move the chain one tooth at a time to get it right, but it is a pain in the butt. in the clymer, it said to align the L TDC up with the two horizontal marks on the cam shaft. did it once each way and still nothing. first, there was backfire through the carbs every time it fired, then 180 degrees later, there is nothing.

is there something i am missing? i am getting to my wits end. please, i help me!!!!!!

thanks
mike

Mike,

Just rebuilt a CL360 from the ground up and it runs great so I should be able to offer some help here.

You mention that you "did it once each way" which I'm assuming means that you rotated the shaft 180 degrees.  There is one correct position for the shaft at the point of installation and that is with the dowel pin (ignition side of the shaft) pointing up (12:00 position).  From there the rotor should be set to the "LT" mark and the cam sprocket set with the two timing mark even with the horizon.  If all of that's done, the valve timing should be correct.

If you haven't done so already, perform a cam chain tension adjustment.  Follow that by adjusting the valve clearances.  Lastly, set the points and ignition timing - make sure to use the light as suggested in the manual.  Unless the carbs. are gummed up or way out of adjustment, you should get it to run to some degree.

By the way, there is a factory update regarding the cam chain tensioners for this engine.  Be sure that you are using the updated parts (see my old post in the Non-SOHC Section for detail regarding this procedure).

Best of luck and write again if you're not able to get it going.
