CB650 Teardown and rebuid .....

So....... this is going to take quite a while, but i thought that I'd go ahead and post some pics and info.  I figure the thread will just move to the back of the line until I get more done  ;D   So here's my story  :P

Let me say this first .... you CB750 RIDERS ARE LUCKY with regards to the amount of parts available and the variety of aftermarket/performance parts at hand.... :'(

I bought a pair if CB650's early in 2003 and tried to rebuild one of them.  What's funny is that I didn't even know how to ride a motorcycle (let alone rebuild one....I didn't even know how to drive stick  ;)) I'm a technician by trade (EET and CLET), but when it came to cars (or motorcycles) I was as dumb as a bag of hammers. The attempted rebuild of one of the 650's failed completely, most likely due to ignorance and mechanical atrocities that I'd rather not mention (let's just say that if a  valve breaks in half and punches into the piston, something was done wrong  ::)).   I've been referring to this site since late 2003 when I bought my running '80 cb650C and I asked questions when needed and read threads constantly. 

I haven't posted much until lately, but I thought it was time for me to run the gamut from beginning to end. I have the following bikes in my garage:

'80 CB650C --- Running until lately
'81 CB650 and CB650C --- Parts bikes
'81 GL1100 Goldwing Interstate (never ran since delivered to my garage)
'07 Triumph Bonneville Black --- With all the goodies... keeps me riding with the least amount of chrome  8)

I'm stripping the '80 CB650C completely down for a cafe/steampunk ride.....

pics to follow and if I finish it by 2009 I'll be impressed....

dont be too hard on yourself,if terry in australia can work on bikes you cant be too much worse. ;D

Terry..... i'm sorry, but i'm not sure whether to take that as an insult or a compliment............

I think you need 3 or 4 more rotors there  ;D ;D ;D

Looking to be on a good start so far, why the full teardown?
Do you plan on replacing the crankshaft bearings while in it this far?

Or were you looking for a challenge?

The strap wrench + rear axle trick worked so well I went around the garage and pulled them all off.  I figured I'll use the best one on this build.

As for the engine... It didn't really have much wrong other than a bad paint job and a couple leaky seals, but I've never been in the crankcase before so I figured it was time to learn   ;).

Everything looks pretty good but I haven't checked any tolerances.  I've got to start making a list of the things I need.

I'm thinking a black and copper color scheme.

I love the look of Copper and Black (in proper portions) but my concern is how to keep the copper from tarnishing.  Any thoughts or ideas on that?  I would imagine a good clear coat would do it, what do you think?

I believe I saw that when OCC was doing the build that used copper from the statue of liberty.
I don't see why clearcoat wouldn't work.

My main concern on the copper plating is cost and durability. 

I've inquired about plating and I don't see that it'll be an issue as long as it's clear coated VERY soon after plating....

But, I'm going to check some of the powder coating shops to see what the price difference is and what kind of color options there are.  I'm trying to go for a "SteamPunk" style (look it up if you don't know what it is), so I'm open to ideas and options. 

I would LOVE to have the copper plating from the OCC chopper (the Stature of liberty bike), but i'll have to talk to some plating shops to get ideas on cost and color turnout.

+1 on the parts availability. Guess there weren't as many 650's built, ergo not as many parts available. Still like mine tho  :)
