Anyone have this weather last night?
« on: March 05, 2008, 04:03:28 AM »
At one point I had the wife grab the dog and get down to the basement FAST!  We had tornado warnings last night and it sounded like one was in our yard.  It finally settled down a little and we went back upstairs and got in bed.  I get up this morning to take the dog out and find many trees have been snapped in half and the HUGE pine that I've been talking about taking down since we first looked at the house has been pulled up by the roots.
Glad it fell away from the house and truck.

I've now got a good excuse to get a new chain on the ol' chainsaw and play with some power tools.   ;D ;D

No, but I had lightning strikes and snowfall at the same time about 4 a.m. yesterday.

Sure am glad you all are all right Cville. While we haven't been THAT close to a tornado, about 5 or 6 yrs ago we had freezing rain that caused trees to breakup (dropping pieces and limbs everywhere) and some fell over. Pretty good size tree next to the house, fell over and just brushed the side of the house. Didn't do anything except screw up some shingles on the edge of the roof. Only chainsaw I had was an electric 16" one and power was out. ::)

Man, it's a good thing that tree didn't drop the other way, it looks big. :o
We had no weather to speak of last night but an electric pole about 3/4 mile from my house lit on fire and they had to cut power in the area for about 30 minutes while they put the fire out.

It was definitely a tornado or serious storm cell.  On the way in to work we saw at least 100 downed trees in a 1/2 stretch.  Talked with a lady at work that lives close by and she said there were more in her area as well.
Our 50 gallon trash can was about 100 yds through through the woods.  Still don't know how it managed that one.

I'm really happy that the tree fell like it did.  I've complained about it from day one but never had the $$ to have someone come take care of it.  I'm crazy but not stupid enough to try hacking at a 60ft tree.  It's about 1 1/2 ft at the base.  Didn't hit anything and saved me from having to pay someone to come cut it down.  That's a win in my book.

Hey Cville,

Get a guy to come in quick and saw that thing into boarding lumber.  That's a mighty nice tree to let rot.

Some guys here in Maine will even saw in exchange for lumber.

With that much of the root ball coming up there shouldn't be too much stress cracks in your final boards.

I posted to Craig's list this morning to see if anyone wants it for just that purpose.  It's a very straight tree and would make some nice boards.  We just don't have the $$ to pay someone to do it.  Basically, anyone wants it, they can have it.  Saves me from having to wear out the chain saw.  I've got plenty other trees to do that on.

Yeah, same here last night, freaked the OL and the dog. We had a huge white pine 15 feet from the front of the house that had to go shortly after we moved in. First quote was to cut it in sections and haul away, $800! Second guy wanted $600, third said he's drop it only for $200. My neighbor had a better idea; "A smart man would ask his neighbor if he minded dropping it on his land after taking a couple of fence sections down." Then my neighbor sent a local forestry student around, his family business is logging. The kid took out the fence sections and dropped it onto the neighbor's land for $75. A limb caught another section and busted some rails. Next day a different neighbor showed up with a huge John Deere tractor with a forklift and hauled the log away. Two days later the new fence rails went up, cut at a local sawmill from the tree that did the damage! How's that for green?

Nice.  Good to have neighbors like that.  Our neighbors tried to put up their own mail box.  After it fell down the first time, I suggested that they get some post hold diggers and use concrete to secure it properly.  They went half way and just poured some quickcrete around the base.  It's down again.  I don't know that I'd want them driving any type of heavy machinery around my house. ;D

Yeah, they might end up doing damage that the tree could have done! ::)

it was pretty hairy here last night, winds gusting to over 50 mph, a dirt bike a buddy dropped off yesterday afternoon for me to work on was blown over in the back yard and it's cover is nowhere to be found.

Every female member of my family was gathered for my cousin's house the day before her wedding.

That morning a tornado smashed through the neighborhood and very luckily skipped the house they were in by a few hundred feet.  The wedding went off without a hitch the next day and they now have a very happy 8 month old boy.

I'm glad you and your family made it through safe and sound, cville  ;)
