We are getting flooded with rain and high winds here in NY. The snow has been moderate down here in the Metro area. Upstate closed to Canada, well it snows every other day.

-10 F here at 6:45 this morning. I put my last sticks of wood in the boiler so after breakfast I'm going out to the woods and hopefully NOT get stuck while gathering more wood.

Well, now they say that there will be some light snow flurries tonight with no expected accumulation. ::) Usually, I don't get too concerned when they say we're going to get snow and get concerned when they say that we're not!  ;D Now, I'm getting confused and not sure what to think. :D Guess we'll just wait and see what happens. ::)

Wow! Only $100 for a cord of wood?
Around here (Vermont) the price ranges $200-225 not delivered.

I also am running out of wood. Down to cutting dead branches off trees in the back yard. Kinda difficult to haul out logs when snow cover is 3-4 feet.
Almost feels like Florida, NOT.
peace,

Ouch, that's harsh! I burn about a cord a week and at that price I would freeze to death. Right now I'm burning a pile of ancient fenceposts, in a couple of days I'll have to get out in the woods again and gather some more. On the bright side, next week looks to have high temps near 40 all week! ;D Perfect wood cutting weather.

Jeez 100 bucks cord, last time I checked it was $400 for 10 cord delivered dry and slab wood with the bark off mostly maple, some birch and the rest hardwood, I was heating 1250 sq' for roughly $ 200 a year depending how rough the winter was. This was with no worries about electrical failure. I love wood heat.

Slab wood is $40 a cord here too but not delivered. The closest saw mill to me is 21 miles away. I have thought about using it but isn't there some trick to burning it? I would think you would have to stack it some special way in the boiler so that air and fire can move through the wood effectively, no? Also I have heard that it generates twice the ash as tree wood does. I love wood heat too and maybe I'll try slab wood if I can't get out in the woods to cut my own. I think for next year I'll cut a bunch this spring and just leave it piled up as 8 ft logs and then next winter if it snows too much at least I'll have a big pile of logs in my yard to cut. I have a buddy who buys a semi truck load of logs in the fall and burns them. The load is 13 cord and he pays $850 for it delivered. That's not too bad either.

Because of where I live I could get both logs split and delivered as well as the slab wood and the difference was that split logs because of mass would burn longer, so you compensated with the slab by picking the thicker pieces, as far as ash went if the slab had more ash or hickory it left little or no ash, the other thing our house had been built about 8 years ago and was well insulated and fairly air tight so on a normal night in the winter we'd let the fire die at about 10 pm and it would be still be 55-60 degrees when I would get up in the morning and the nights when it was really cold I'd pee at about 3-4 am and throw another piece on then and let the embers start it up. The main difference I found between slab and log was price, because each heating season was different it would take a little bit of a relearning curve to get it right, we sold our house last July and moved to a place with gas and I found that around August I started to get twitchy because I didn't have my wood supply in, but I think thats universal if you heat with wood.

My situation is a little different than yours. My house was built in 1854 and still has the original insulation and single pane windows in most of it. If it's windy at all I can feel the breeze through the wall outlets and around the window frames. When I was using propane to heat my house I would burn through a 500 gal tank in a month. Now I have an outdoor boiler and in floor heat in the basement, with the LP furnace acting as an air handler to circulate the warm air from the basement floor to the upstairs. It seems like the boiler works best with big chunks of sort of green wood. Too dry and I'm filling the fire box every 2 hours. If the pieces are too small then I'm filling more often too. You are exactly right about the learning curve, every year I spend the first month re-learning how to run the boiler most efficiently. I also feel nervous when my supply of wood gets low, but as you say that's universal among wood people. Soon the heating season will be over again, and riding season will begin. ;D

COME ON SPRING!
