C'mon, don't be a cheapskate and give the seller $10 additional. It would still be a steal and at least you will be promoting selling things.

Otherwise, had I been him, I would rather throw it away than sell it for 3 bucks.

Please... ::)  If you don't want to sell something for 3 bucks, then start the minimum bid higher than that.  To do what you suggest (throwing something away rather than selling at the price it went for) would show a serious lack of character.

Don't take me wrong, I have ALWAYS stuck with my compromise and have completed all my sales, regardless of the price. But after a few low final value sales I decided not to sell anymore, or if I do, I try to set a starting price high enough that in case it only gets one bid at least I make a decent profit.

I recently wont two different auctions from the same sellers, two front mudguards for my GZ250 at 1 euro each. The seller sent me a shipping quote of EXACTLY the postage costs. Nevertheless I paid him 10 or 15 euro more, can't recall. It didn't make any difference to me and I'm sure it did for him. As always, the key is that every transaction should be a win-win situation. You can get away in the short term, but in the long term, there will be less items for sale and less chances to get something cheap. Obviously, a $3 chain is cheap, but $20 for the same chain is still cheap.

I felt a little bad also. Normally I don't mind as sellers seem to highjack up the shipping price to try and score extra, but this guy was very nice and has already sent me a tracking number.

Low prices do suck, but it has happened to us all.  Funny thing is he had two different ones listed ending at the same time, and I bid high for the first one and lost and just happened to look at his other auctions.

If any of the parties don't get a minimun satisfaction, it will retire from the playfield. What happened to USPS? They saw they had a lot of international mail, so in order to maximize their earnings they jacked up the prices. Now I rarely buy from the US. Before they could make $3 or $4 per each one of my purchases, now they make $0. That's what happens with greed.

It is obvious that the seller expected more watchers. He has shown to be a honest guy not inflating the shipping, but anyway, I think it's fair to pay a fair price for things you buy, even if you get them at a low price. As I say, $10 is still a more-than-cheap price and at least you will cover his fees. You get a cheap chain, and he gets rid of a chain he was not going to use without having to feel stupid. Both of you win.

I have tipped a few ebay sellers.. if I think I got a great deal I dont mind.. usually I was in for more than I had to pay.. keeps everyone happy..

But I also get a lot of tips in my shop, maybe cuz I work too cheap.. but what comes around goes around..

Sellers have different reasons for starting low.. 1 is to prompte biding.. another is because they have nothing into the item or made their money back already..

When selling on EBay i found you need to look at the average, i have sold somethings i thought would sell high for nothing, then  i would sell something i thought was crap for wayyyy more than i thought i could ever get for it, like an OLD NOT PERFECT 72 petcock for $50.
I once had a box of late 60 early 70's horns for Yamaha, i sold most of them for $75 per.
I never in my wildest dreams thought i could get more than $5. max.
This only works if you sell allot but you need to averaged out the money over all sales

Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

I like the way my feedback reads..

I never pay electronically (yeah.. big surprise, huh?), almost always want it shipped USPS.. which some sellers do not prefer..so if they work with ya I appreciate it.

I got lots of cool stuff I never found elsewhere, I dont mind buying them a sixpack.. but a steak dinner is a bit much on a small item.. biggest problem was most did not know or send small parcel and web quoted price was aways about double. Now it is almost tooo much shipping US to Canada to bother with little stuff.

That's great if you have the cash to give away, but if I happen to have an extra ten bucks in my pocket, I'd rather use it to treat my best friend to a burger and a beer than give it to someone I've never even met. :)

wow!  some auctions slip thru the cracks, don't they?
that's an 80 percent discount on the same chain i just purchased for cheap thru dad being a parts manager.

754... not arguing your ways but what exactly is wrong w/ electronic payment?  you can file a claim and get compensation for a bum deal if need be.  it is instant.  you pay me now... i can go to the grocery store and use my paypal business debit immediately.  my only complaint is the finance charges but that goes for snowboarding lift tickets more so than paypal for me.  [edit]: seller pays paypal fees, not buyer (unless the seller adds that into the auction somehow)

i guess the id theft is a threat but, they sell insurance for that.  its reallllll cheap thru my girlfriend's work insurance.

  precisely!

the seller knew what they were getting into.

Part of the attraction of the auction process is that willing buyers meet willing sellers. A bargain is struck, and that's that. Putting a little extra in the envelope may seem like the right thing to do, but to me it's up to the seller to figure out what his expectations are, and then craft the auction to meet those expectations. That's what the minimum bids and reserves are for. while occasionally I've paid less than I expected for something I've wanted (or needed), at the same time I've paid more than I thought was fair value as well---and to me, that's where the process falls out. My conscience is clear when I get a good deal, because the seller obviously thinks so, and so does the market, since I was the highest bidder.

Believe it or not some seller do need & depend on the money, I know I have..

I dont have or use credit cards, and ebay owning paypal is something I did not want to feed.. if any of you spent any time on ebay forums you could easily see how as a seller you can get ripped off using it..

Sometimes a few bucks may mean it suddenly doesnt get lost or damaged after the sale, the seller may have more stuff he will sell you offline.happened a lot to me..or sell you something you saw in the background.. so if they already like you as a buyer you have a better chance..

Mostly though I live in a country where USPS websearch will show 14.00+shipping even if it is small and can be sent small parcel for 1/2 of that.. so sometimes the tip is not so voluntary... if you want it you pretty well got to pay what they ask for shipping..

i can appreciate that!  i haven't spent any time on those forums though... sounds really boring.
i only sell a few things here and there so, i'm not terribly worried about getting ripped off.
can you expound on those possible rip-offs?

if you didnt  CYA by getting deivery confirmation.. and the buyer lies about getting it or lies about condition..paypal refunds them their money chherfully.

Aso paypal is not guaranteed funds in your account for a few days.. if you have money to cover it fine.. but if I get a money order, the cash is mine when I cash it..

The ebay forums like soapbox & motors were pretty good education of what could befall you as a seller..

Paypal...some swear by it..

& some swear at it!!!

There is a good reason many Powersellers refuse to take it..
