Bike weights anyone??
« on: March 07, 2008, 06:38:47 PM »
Has anyone here weighed their bike before?

I did last year, and with my '79cb650 setup with stock airbox, 750 carbs, a rack, and a 4-4 exhaust off a '81cb650c, a 750 DOHC dual disk setup on the front as well.
It weighed 515 lbs. Oh and a plastic fairing as well.

Now with a 4-1 exhaust, pods(airbox/sub fender part replaced), no rack, no fairing it weighs(with 4 gallons of gas) 455 lbs(+- 5lbs)
WOW... only 625 with me on the scale as well!

Anyone else weigh their bikes?

How light can you go???

I enjoyed building my wifes CB550 with part of the focus on weight loss. I don't know what a stock 550 weighs because I bought this bike in boxes but it ended up at 395lbs. Not a lightweight but I consider it an improvement seeing as how I did add some weight too with dual discs, oil cooler, steering damper, etc.

I'm pretty obsessed with the weight of my 400F.  It's around 345-350 lbs right now according to Wal-Mart's finest bathroom scales.  There's not a whole lot on it that doesn't have to be there, but it is legal with lights, horn, turn signals and a mirror.

I'm at the point where I need to decide if I want to remove the starter, switch to a smaller battery, and maybe run pod filters.  All of those things may make the bike a little less useful on the street.  Other than that, my shocks weigh a ton and I'm always scrounging ebay for some alloy bodied Konis.  I have some CNC'd aluminum rearsets that I need to make work and also an aluminum swingarm on my wish list.  That should get me down around 330.

I'd like to see the bike closer to 300 lbs, but the last bit may get really expensive.  Machine work on the hubs and cases, lighter engine internals, titanium fasteners are all beyond my means.

...as I sit here typing with about 5 pounds of cheese in my belly from the fondue restaurant...

As of last november my 78 750k weighted 466 lbs.with about half a tank off gas, but I was only weighting 1 wheel at a time, so I don't know how accurate that is. I've taken about 4/5 lbs. more off since. I am working on installing cbr1000rr rear sets now, but I don't know how much weight that will actually save. I assume the stock pegs and brake arm are some what heavier. How much does a starter motor weight? I'll be more than happy to get to 450 lbs.

ekim98, that starter motor weighs around the 7lb mark but can't remember if that includes the relay and cables.

My 80/81 650 creation 650 with 4-1 pods and a luggage rack was 465 if I remember.  The race bike went down to 400.

My old CB590 race bike weighed 345 lbs but it had few stock parts left. I spoke with another vintage racer this weekend at Daytona and he said his stripped 550 was 350 lbs as well. The stock bike was 450 if I remember right! at roughly 6 lbs per HP, removing 100 lbs makes a HUGE difference in performance.

I too wanted to say nice 400F tsflstb.

Whenever I see your bike, I always love looking at that seat  :D

All that I do, is weight the parts that I take off and simply subtract them from Honda's numbers
from my book.

Mine weights around 380lb-ish. Nothing that can't be reduced with some aftermarket exhaust.

Even a MAC system is lighter than stock!!

To see if my Honda book is accurate, does anybody know what the weight is of the 400F??

300-350 range is possible huh?

So you guys in this range, have you gone through and re-done the wiring harness?
Are you running aluminum tanks?
I'm assuming that seat replacement is a necessity at that point.

Unfortunately the 650 is stuck with the starter motor...ok paulages has gone beyond this limitation, but it's not easy or cheap i'm thinking.

Clip ons seem to be a common item, when using those, Are you changing to shorter clutch and throttle cables?

tsflstb Where on earth did you get that muffler???
Thats AWESOME! How does it sound? And is it legal for street use??

I should let tsflstb answer but I can tell you that muffler looks to be a Supertrap. Back pressure and noise can be tuned by adding or removing discs. But I'd like to hear his experience with the police. ;)

That's a gorgeous bike.  Do you have a thread showing what you've done to lighten it up?  I'm looking for a 400F myself and would like to lighten it up when I find one.

With the latest frame i have gotten i'm tempted to see how light is possible.
Either a bare bones chopped, or cafe-styled.

Are there any good bar options other than clip ons for weight reduction?

I keep meaning to drill holes in those rotors to help keep the weight down... but until I have my overbore done on my other bike I'm gonna wait... no need to go bike-less unless forced.
 ;D ;D ;D
On that bike I have put on the sidestand(was off last year) and removed the centerstand, but not the mounts.
I'm not too sure I want to cut/grind on this frame since It was powdercoated only 1 year ago.

What batteries are anyone using when removing the stock batteries?
What are the dimensions of your battery?
And what are your experiences good or bad?
Anyone try NIMH, or ni-cad batteries?(is this possible with the charging system of CB's?)
I have heard of gel batteries being used, any reviews?

Going to single disk in front is lighter to but I could be wrong.
Grinding off pasenger pegs might lighten it up to but I could be wrong.  Spend the big bucks at a dealer and get some lighter wheels to. Stock comstars are heaver than #$%* but I could be wrong.

It took Dymag wheels, tubeless racing slicks, no dyno or starter and a tiny battery. Of course no wiring, lights or anything else to get below 350. I don't think 300 is possible on a 550 without a custom frame carbon tank etc.. could maybe do it on a 400?

It's a suprtrapp spark arrestor (for dune buggies) welded to a muffler adapter and bolted to a Kerker header.  Haven't had any trouble with the law or passing state inspections.  The exhaust with the disks weighs about 8 or 10 pounds total (stock weighed about 25) and performs the same as the megaphone as far as I can tell.

Getting rid of the tire tube would be a big thing.  There is some kit for sealing up spoke wheels on the supermoto race bikes, but they haven't gotten it approved for street use yet.

The list of mods I saw in that video......

AMAZING.
Lightened brake stay, milled upper tree, tiny tach, digi speedo, the exhaust... WOW.
I'm sure i am only touching on the mods to yours with that list.
Oh, and the keyswitch, nice touch!

350 range huh?
Wow...
Do you have larger pistons/hot cam in that beast as well?
