forgive me if im being really stupid but how do you know if a coils suitable for the job?
Ive found a few twin output coils to replace mine but im really unsure on how i know if theyre ok?

ive just found the ones on this page about half way down......

http://www.norbsa02.freeuk.com/goffyelectrex.htm

12V coil with 2 outputs for twin cylinder machines, modern or classic. 3 Ohm impedance For points or electronic ignition.

The moulded in HT leads are 560MM (22 inches) long.

Body 70MM (with mountings 97MM) x 43MM

These give the fattest blue spark you've ever seen £27.50 ea.

any good to replace my originals?

edit: ill get the new points and condensors in first and see what happens

Those aren't from a CB650 unless the '79's were different from '80 and later.

hey man whats up??  yeah i think those will work.....take an ohmmeter and measure the ohms on the connectors.  if you have points 5 or 3 ohms will work...if you have EI ignition....you need 3 ohms....but if i am wrong i am sure someone will say so.  i have a dyna s ignition and coils from a honda cbr 929 that are 3 ohm,  and she never ran better.  i had stock coils with the dyna and was having weak spark problems.  but that is another thread.

come to think of it revjim....i looked more closely at your pictures....i think those coils are off a newer bike, those brackets are similar to the 3 ohm coils i got...i think they are 3 ohm, and will work with points or even better a EI ignition.   use those coils and upgrade later, but yeah i am pretty sure they will work.
