Tiny rear sprocket  :)

18 front and 35 rear Dave, I put it on tall gearing as it was to livley off the line when I first rode it 10 years ago.

That's a long swingarm.  Not stock is it?

Sorry, I see now where it looks like you've bolted on an extension.

Looks like the swingarm is bolted to the underside of the seat?

Sorry, I see now where it looks like you've bolted on an extension.

It's 6.75" longer, without it the bike just wanted to wheelie all the time.
The longer arm has cured that problem but, it's now spinning up like hell.
It's just a matter of finding a good set up now in the tyre pressure department.

The rear damper has been removed Dan. Had it been there, you would have just been able to see it under the tank.
It's been replaced by a strut, saving over 2kgs.  The bike weighs 63kgs dry compaired to 71 stock.

Thanks Brent, 1st outing in a couple of weeks over the quarter at Santa Pod, the UKs premier drag strip.
It doesn't really suit low powered bikes because of the stuff they spray onto the surface to give the power monsters traction,  holds the smaller bikes back. It's that sticky, if you stand on it in one place for more than a few seconds, your feet stick to the surface.
I am only riding there to get some time on the bike.
The week after I'm riding in a eighth mile sprint at a place called Houghton Tower. The surface there is just the opposite to the Pod, very little grip at all, even had my little Benly spinning up there a few years back with just 13bhp. ;D ;D ;D ;D
Again just to get accustomed to the bike on different surfaces.

Never seen an RS or any GP bike tweaked for drag racing like that.  I love the look of pure racing machinery.  It's amazing a functional motorcycle can weigh 138 lbs.  Is there a class for these at the track or is it just for fun?

How do you launch with that powerband - did you beef up the clutch or plan to change it often?  What kind of times and trap speeds do you expect?  The power to weight has to be right there with modern liter bikes.

tsflstb, thanks for the intrest and some good questions and points raised.
I was surprised at your amazement of the bikes weight. The FIM set weight limits for racing, was this not the case, I am sure the factories concerned would get them a lot lighter than what I have done. Even myself, if I were so inclined could build a machine using the same motor down to about 80lbs with the use of lighter and stronger materials. It's all a matter of cost and I believe my bike as built will be up to the task put before it.
I know you are a weight freak with your 345lbs 400 weighed on your Wal-Mart bathroom scales ;D ;D ;D people laugh we you tell them how you weighed them.  If you were to put your bike on a very accurate set of scales, I'll bet there wouldn't be + or - a lb or so. I weigh mine the same way ;)

The bike hasn't been built for drag racing although it looks a little as if it has. It's been built to attack all the British short distance speed records in the 175cc class. The distances are quarter mile, kilometer and mile, from both standing and flying starts.
For the standing quarter, this is the reason for it resembling a small drag bike, it needs to get off the line quickly without going skywards, hence the longish swingarm. At normal club sprints there is no class for 175cc machines so I have to run in the 250cc class. At that stage, yes, it's just for fun and I'll be using these events both sprints and drag races to test the bike before the British Records Weekend next year.

You asked how I launch with the power band. That's a good question. Under 7,000rpm it has zilch power ;D ;D ;D anything over those revs and it may as well be spinning at 13,000 with around 40bhp straight in :o :o :o that's why I have given myself a full season of testing to give myself a better chance of achieving my goal.

The clutch is stock HRC item and should be more than up to the job. The guy that built my motor has been sprinting one in 125 format for years with no clutch problems.

The speeds I am hoping to better are, British LSR of 118mph, World LSR of 126mph and the outright  LSR (American National Record) of 133mph held by Belan Wagner on the Bonneville salt flats. By May 10th I should know if it's anywhere near to these speeds when I put the bike over its first standing kilo with a speed trap at the end.

Regards Sam. ;)

Thanks for the response.  I was just really impressed that an entire 40HP motorcycle weighs less than my 400F's 30HP engine.

I didn't really understand the concept of a "sprint" race.  I guess we have something like that in my neck of the woods.  You could fold the RS up in your luggage and run it down here on the way to Bonneville.  We've got thick air that the horsepower junkies love.

Good luck with the testing and don't forget about us when you're a famous land speed record holder.

A sprint race takes on the same format as a drag race over the standing start quarter mile, the only difference is you don't eliminate anyone.
You get a couple of practice runs then six timed competition runs. Person with the fastest time in his class wins.
Other events are over the Kilometer and mile.

I really would like to come over to the states to race again, I raced at Gulf Port raceway near Biloxy in the early 80s. It was in the middle of your winter but was like a very hot summer to me.  When the summer did arrive it was way to hot for me. :D :D :D

I haven't forgoten about you now (if you get the gist) I'm still speaking to you,  ain't I. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D not sure about the famous though. ::)

You're way too modest Sam.  I would have something like that tatooed on my forehead.

I did some internet searching but not sure where to look for the record.  How about some details - when, where, which class, how fast?

Not sure if this will work but here goes.

These are the current British records. All the 175 records are held by Pete Irons.

I can't copy and paste the World records and I know if I put the link in it won't work because it has three underline dashes in the address that will clash with the auto link up. I'll put it up with a gap so it don't under line it and you can type it in yourself.

http://www.fim.ch/EN/rules/Records/2005/05World     Records_Listing_CATI_2wheelers.pdf

If  you type that in without the gap, it might take you there.

Yes Dave, I should have done something about them while I was younger, It would have been easier to wrap myself round the bike. :D :D :D :D  As it is, I've had to lower the footpegs to stop my knees touching my beer belly ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Billy440cars has some pics of my old record bikes and myself when I was slim and good looking ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D not sure if Billy has a scanner or if the pics are good enough to reproduce, I'll PM him.

tsflstb, Billy440cars is going to try to scan a copy of an old pic I sent to him of my old 175 record bike.
It's a ohc four stroke twin with pressed steel frame and forks.
I got that one down to 139lbs just by removing all the clutter that wasn't needed and using smaller parts from similar models.
The stock weight of the bike was 264lbs. :o :o :o :o
If you google Honda C or CA95 or C or CA92 you may be able to see what it looked like with all the lard on it. :D :D :D

Sam. ;)

P.S. see if this works
and    http://www.youtube.com/user/EvinrudeDude

and    if that EvinrudeDude lost a bit of weight, that little bike would fly ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D sorry Danny ::) ::) ::) ::) ::)
