Furthest travelled on no money!!
« on: March 08, 2008, 07:54:50 PM »
Leaving Sturgis one year we were in the middle of nowhere Wyoming, but sorta near a town when we came upon a guy on a yellow harley chopper.  Calif plate....Said he was out of gas, but was meeting some people in the next town.. about 6-10 miles down the road. He was sitting in the shade under a big old tree and didnt have much gear for being on the road..anyway we gave him some gas..probably a few beercans full or more.

We waited till it fired and left him there wishing him a good ride. and went on to the next town, a very small town. Well we did not see any bikes there waiting and we rode on..

But it struck me as odd.. and everytime I tjhought about it, I thought more and more that he wasnt meeting anyone! He was just 1000 miles or so from home and had no money :o.. or very little!! Well I hope he made it!!.. ahh what an adventure..

A few years ago I went to Wis. to buy some mag wheels. When I got about 100 miles from home I took out $150 from the ATM. Stayed in a hotel on my other card about an hour from the shop I was going to. The next day, when I got to the place for mag wheels (15 hrs from home)and went to the Post office to get a money order for the mags and both of my credit cards were "locked" because of unusual activity and I couldnt get any money at all (had to write a check for the mag wheels). Gas was alot cheaper then and I did make it out and back on the $150 I took out.
It really had me worried though.

on another odd note, it seamed like every where I stopped in Wis., they were playing Bob Seger tunes. ???

A friend of mine ran out of gas in Milwaukee and had like an 80 mile ride back to Oshkosh with no money.  This was at night when all the gas stations were closed and gas was like 50 cents a gallon.  We are talking the early 1970's.  Well, he stopped at every closed gas station on the way home and emptied all the hoses of gas.  You know how you can push the handle on the gas nozzle and some gas comes out even when the pumps are off.  That is what he did all the way home.

I think the new pumps dont do that anymore, or there is less gas in them as they pump differently.

One thing to remember filling bikes is if the last pump user pumped say Regular and you are using Supreme, then your first gallon is likely diluted.

So, be courteous and let your buddies fill up first!! And maybe that buddy that always has that teeny edge on you acceleration wise will get a bad tankfull and you can finally kick his arse ;D.. Let him run at least 10 min for it to mix and get in the carbs..

Yeah we did that back in the day. The new pumps have almost no gas in the lines. But in the good old days you could get 1/2 a pint from each hose.

I have done the run it up to 50 or 60 mph with low throttle opening, then kill engine get in neutral & coast..

Repeat over and over..helps stretch that gas..

Make sure you carry at least a pop or beer with you when you ride.. so if you run out of gas & are with another bike (or one stops to help).. you dont have to look for one in the ditch and then try to clean it.. they can be pretty dirty..

In the mid 70's, I had a custom van that I had finished up and my wife and I wanted to explore the country a bit.  We headed out through the mid west , through Colorado, up through northern California, and started heading over to the black hills.  We were in the vacinity of Mt. Rushmore when the money ran out (we live just outside Chicago  :o).  All we had was a Standard Oil credit card.  Back then, the only thing you could use the card for was buying gas.  So from then on it was a driving marathon all the way back to Chicago, taking turns behind the wheel.  We were mighty hungry by the time we got back home.  :P

Funny how a thread brings up old memories you otherwise wouldn't think about.

A bunch of friends and I rented a house out in the country, about 15 miles to the nearest store or gas station.  After a loooong night of partying we ran out of gas about a mile from home, with a good buzz on the four of us pushed the old 66 Impala the rest of the way home.  More partying ensued...  By morning we had a problem, about 8 MPG in that car and a gallon of gas robbed out of the lawn tractor.  Fortunately we found we were at a considerably higher elevation than the gas station, so we pulled every hill with the engine and shut it off coasting down hills sometimes at 50 to 70 miles and hour passing cars.  It was at time a real hairy ride when we lost vacuume to the brakes , but we made it.

$5 in gas and we were back on our way.

I worked at a gas station back then and $5 of gas was 7.7 gal.  Damn!  NOW look at the prices.
