Silly questions about Static Timing - CB500/4
« on: March 15, 2008, 06:00:22 PM »
I was just going through a few maninenance checks tonight (it's still gonna be a while before I can fire the bike) - and I thought that I'd check the static timing. Despite I have a couple of "silly" quesyions:

1. Are the "F" and "T" timing marks the actual letters or the line that located next to the respective marks?

2. When doing a static timing set, do I hook my test light to engine ground and then to the blue or yellow wire while it is still connected? Or should the wire be disconnected from the point set? The manual is a "little" vague on that one.

3. It seem that I can get 1-4 set good, but 2-3 is a little off. Doesn't it make sense that if you rotate the plate to to dial one of them (1-4) in, it would also affect the other (2-3)?

I also noticed that the test light will illuminate just as the points begin to open versus when the points are open to the fullest point on the cam - the "F" mark is long past the timing mark mark when the points are fully open. I assume this is correct.

Any detailed help, including pics is greatly appreciated. I just want to make sure that I've got it right.

Gap  both first.

Static time 1:4, then move subplate to set 2:3.

1.  The line next to the letter

2.  The wire needs to be connected to the points in order to use the test light.

The light will turn on as soon as the points separate, which is where you need to time it to.  The only thing you need to be concerned about when the points are fully open is measuring and setting the gap.
