How Do I read this gauge??
« on: March 11, 2008, 05:08:41 PM »
I'm measuring my runout on my 400F rims and sad to say, I have a good amount. :(

But how do I read this gauge?? Any help on this is appreciated as this was my fathers.

Meaning, I have no instructions ;D

My measurements for my front rim were 18 on the gauge at the widest point.

I have so many gauges, I don't even know how to read half of them.....sadly to say.

Thank you for any help

Each tick on the large scale is .001 inch. Once around is .100 or 1/10 inch. Each tick on the small dial is .100" . Once around is .500 or 1/2 inch. Full stroke of the plunger is 1 inch.

Enjoy.

If by 18 you mean 18 ticks or .018" that's not bad at all.  I spent a lot of time truing my rims and got them around .010 to .012.  You're well under the limit in the manual which is something like .040.

Are you getting some wiggle or vibration on the road?

Hey loopy, Made in China ::) ::) ::)  I wouldn't worry mate, the gauge is more than likely further out than your wheel.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

That gauge is WAAAY to o accurate for the use you are putting it to!

A piece of bent wire and a steel rule is enough as the tollerance is + or - 1/8 inch both sidways and vertical

DONT FORGET you wont get it perfect all the way round as there will ALWAYS be a "kick" where the steel rim is joined by weld
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Thanks guys for the replies!!!

Very funny Sam and Heff. LoL

You can't beat $5 bucks for a gauge that works.  ;)

No wobble, but at 45 - 55mph, I do hear some sort of whooing noise. And it's definitely coming from the front tire.

Could this be from a bad balanced tire? I'm eying the rim for any up and down lateral, but I don't see any.

The tire as a tiny bit though.....

Thanks again for the help,

LL

could be your brain wondering who the heck that whooing noise is coming from and are they on your tail?    ;D

better twist that grip some more, for good measure.   8)
