77 550k, pilot jet screws, how many turns out?

My Haynes manual says 1 and a half. When I just checked them, they were out 2 and a half, or more.
i guess this means i should buy a vacuum gauge, huh?

The factory settings for the idle mix screws are just a baseline starting point. Many bikes will run fine at this setting, but they should be set for your particular situation.
As for the vacuum gauge, the idle mix screws don't affect overall vacuum. You'll need one of those to synchronize the carbs, but that's a different procedure from setting the idle mix.

The Honda spec booklet also says 1 1/2 turns out from LIGHTLY seated. Only applies if you have stock exhaust and air filter, though. Otherwise, it's just a starting point. It's adjusted with a sensitive tachometer, not a vacuum guage.
