Refers to the shape of the rocker box covers

One looks like a shovel. one a pan, on a set of knuckles etc

Both links are interesting, but both omit the 45ci. flathead 1929-1973.

my next bike is going to be an 80-83 shovel, basically the more durablke bottom end as in the 84-99 evolution motors with the big ports and killer looks of a shovelhead.

Hey, don't forget the brand new Sh1thead (tm).
Comes complete with a leather-clad dentist and a 20year payment plan.

Yeah, but the V-Rod is all Porsche, so does that really count?

I've put lots of miles on 2 late shovels I used to own. Never had one let me down, but they were well cared for. Top ends need freshening every 20-25k but that's cheap and easy to do. Bottoms last a long, long time. Put in an Andrews A grind street cam, wakes it up and still as streetable as stock. There's probably better and more expensive carbs out there, but I always liked the S&S Super E. Easy to tune and a big improvement over the stock keihin.
