Hmmm. This all sounds more like bad carbs rubbers than over-flowable pods...

I'll just throw in my two cents worth here.

Especially after major changes to both intake and exhaust, it is easily possible that a bike with those type of carbs can be running rich at low/medium speed/rpm, yet also run lean at high speed/rpm. Or even opposite of that.
I've been through it myself.
I had a Honda with similar carbs (a twin, though) on which I'd installed Uni filters and much more free-flowing exhaust. The bike's plug readings indicated rich, but it idled great, with snappy throttle response. However, when pulling hard at high revs/speed, it would tend to crap out. This was confusing to me.
When it displayed that behavior, I tried using the choke a bit (at speed, now), and it ran better. Aha - a clue !!
Clearly, this bike was rich at low and mid, lean at high. The changes were getting responses that were not "linear" like I expected.
The solution, which was sort of counter-intuitive at first, was to go to larger main jets and drop the needle down all the way. This leaned it out at the low end, and made it richer on the top end.
Problem solved, good running at all rpm and loads.

bill
Gotta give credit where credit is due!!! You set it up,played with it ,dialed it in and enjoyed it!!! Its not the easiest thing you will ever do but it sure is sweet when you get it runnin flawlessly. You pretty much said you set yours up like I did.......ended up with fat mains and needles set to 2nd from leanest. No hicups all through throttle range.

the air turbulance issue mostly effects cb750's.  my CB550's never had this issue.  but my 750's do...well, at least the one that still has pods.  stacks tend to fix the turbulance issue from the people that i've talk to in the chopper world.  i'll find out soon, as i should have some in the next week or so.

but i too never noticed a difference on my Cb550.

Yes Bill, I agree.  Re-jetting when installing pods is a definite must.  I've gone through this, too.  I'm pretty sure this is why I'm not seeing the problems that others are reporting with their pods.

I read once somebody ran pods inside an air box for even air flow across them.

for what its worth, i got my 60mph and faster  stumbling fixed.  It was the bowl vent tubes hanging too low and getting hit with turbulent air.  i cut about 2 inches off of them and evened them all up and the bike now runs smooth at highway speeds.

Just a recommendation for others that might want to try this for a fix.   I didn't even think of those tubes causing an issue until a really knowledgable guy told me to try it.

I tried pods long time ago...still think the air-box is best for all around performance.

I have to wonder, what are you specifically after in going thru all this.

...better top end, better full throttle?

i am currently going through this issue.....runs great at low-end...up through half-way, then starts back talking and sputtering after about 6k rpm......i didn't, however, put pods on, or take off air box. what i did was take the bottom half of the box off, cut off the two horns on the front and back, then, put it back on....i'm about to get a "new to me" stock box because it seemed o.k. before i did this, now, crap all over the place....would a strip of duct tape over one of the inlets(rear inlet, preferably) momentarily solve this?  i haven't re-jetted, and don't think i will as i don't know if i will keep this bike.  it's been nothing but headache after headache.  feels like owning a jeep it's so problematic.  btw, it's a cb750k5.  thanks for any insight!

you probably just need to up the main jets.  if the issue is effected by throttle amount alone.

for me, it was fine at 1/2, 3/4 and 4/4 throttle at any RPM unless i was doing 60mph or close to it.

I would wait till you get the air-box.  Why waste your time?

Took me a year to get mine road worthy, but mine was in bad shape.  What is good, is that when you do get it right....it'll stay that way for a very long time.

My theory was, get it right the way it was made first....that way you'll learn about how/what Honda did.  Then if you want to modify it, you'll understand which way to go.

thanks.  i've been reading many posts and have found today that while i have increased air flow(opening airbox a bit), i have NOT increased jet size....i feel embarassed by this as i have owned quite a few bikes and a parking lot full of carbuerated cars!  i should have seen that relation, however, at the job place.....these things tend to come in waves of non-busyness, therefore, my idea for duct tape(to get me to the parts store tonight!)  i will be replacing the stock airbox with another...just for bragging rights, here's a pic of my hundred dollar sight-unseen purchase made about three years ago. the picture is from about two months ago...yup one hundred dollars!  that's why i'm so frustrated about this.hmmmmmm.......how to do this?

Yes, I understand your desire to ride, even a little, but running lean can lead to a burned intake valve...cool your jets (pun)!

Hey, all the british bikes I owned in the 70s and 80s took some typical exhaust modifications and airfilter mods without jet changing.....so changing the jets on the SS when I tried pods (briefly) was news to me.  ....but I knew not to ride it because you can burn an intake valve under the right conditions.

well, my problem was, i needed the bike to get home from work....it has gone beyond the desire to ride.  it has become a necessity, not necessarily for me, rather, fuel cost.  i only get 19 mpg in my car, as compared to 50ish on my bike.  i have a 20 mile commute from southwest denver to parker.  if you do the math at 3.90/gal, you can plainly see the necessity.  then add mortgage, child care, insurance, public service, tv/phone/net, oh yeah, food too!  it just becomes a need to ride position.  what's funny is that it doesn't seem to affect most people, or they're just sheep and deal with the poorness that comes from filling those f250's and escalades, and navigators that they think they need to own as a result of "big dogs" in the public spotlight!  btw, i put a piece of duct tape over the forward intake port that was enlarged.  obviously, that totally fixed the lean problem...now i'll just ride it for the rest of the year, until i do something drastic over the winter to it.  chopped....that'll be a play by play.  someone show me how to download pics, this site keeps telling my file is too large.  i don't know how to shrink it.  thanks

If you're running Windows XP, go here and download the Image Resizer Powertoy:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/Downloads/powertoys/Xppowertoys.mspx

Once installed, you can just right-click on an image, or select myltiple images then right-click, and select "Resize Pictures".  Make sure to check the options under the "Advanced" button, I recommend NOT resizing the original pics, let it make a copy, that way you sill have the full-size original.
