First ride yesterday! '73 350F
« on: March 16, 2008, 06:35:09 AM »
I first heard about this bike from a friend about 10 years ago. He wanted to buy it and cafe it out. I soon after moved to NC and forgot all about it. In those years I'd owned a few Honda fours: CB750A, CB550, CBR600F4i, CBR600rr.
After the fun of a divorce (and subsequent selling of all my stuff) I just recently moved back to NEPA. In some conversation or another the friend mentions it again. I was really surprised it was still there but jumped when he said the owner only wanted $250 for it.

Turns out it's a one owner bike that was purchased only a few miles from where it ended up for all those years. The original title, key and toolkit came with it along with the packing list that I'm guessing told what was in the crate when it was shipped. It managed 8,000 miles in 10 years and then was covered and parked. It's in really nice shape, with the pipes being really solid although I don't think they are original.
It also had a 4 foot high sissy bar on the back (who puts these things on???).

It being winter I decided to go slow and clean it up really well.
Luckily my girlfriend is understanding of bike parts in the house and not bad at polishing them up herself. A tube and a half of Simicrome polish later everything shined as well as it ever would. Tires, tubes, rebuild kits (carbs, master cyl, caliper), brake pads, a few lenses that were cruddy and of course the grab bar among a bunch of other things were purchased and installed. Maintenance wise all fluids and filters were changed, valve and points adjusted, chain soaked in kero and then relubed using modern lube, headstock and wheel bearings bearing cleaned and lubed, swing arm greased up all nice with a million things I'm forgetting right now.

Yesterday was the first ride. I only went a few miles but it was so much fun! This little 350 is easily one of my favorite bikes. Partially because it's great fun to ride, partially because I brought it back from the dead. It even fires on one kick from cold!
Still needs a few little things but it's just about ready for the spring.

If anyone has a front and rear rim in good shape please let me know. The front is straight but pitted and the rear has got a dinger in it. I would like to replace them sooner or later. I also need a front brake light switch.

Anyway, on to pics. I only took a few of them from yesterday. I don't take before pics because I think it jinxes you and I don't like to take a chance...

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!

Yeah, all of the paintwork is stock. I like a lot better compared to rubber fork gaitors.

Who would have thought that the little ol' 350 is the one I drag outa the garage most.

I think of it as doing my part for the planet..,.great gas milage, recycling. and a hoot to boot.

It seems like such a small bike!  How tall are you fixahonda?  What would you say the top speed is and how much does the bike weigh?

My sister-in-law wants a bike and I'm wondering if that would be a good fit for her.  I was originally thinking a 250 but I don't see why a 350 wouldn't work.

anyways, It looks Great! Your elbow grease has paid off!

thanks

Ex wife and niece both learned to ride on mine....

Little tall but all and all a good starter bike.

I'm not keen on riding mine down the expressway but it will do 70+ no problems....

At that speed the RPM's are a bit high...

hit a ton about a year ago... top speed.
my 350 is harder to ride than many beginner type bikes i've ridden... vintage does not equal a cinch to ride.
although, the seat height and controls are all in the right place.
mine has/had, before the blown gasket, more than enough power to haul my 145 pound self up and around mountain roads.

if you are talking about the ex250 or maybe the rarer vtr250 of the late eighties... i would recommend those more as a starter bike.  now they are a cinch to ride.

It is fairly easy to ride and it moves my 5'10" 170lbs self around perfectly fine, but you are right Heffay, they are a bit trickier to ride than an ex250 or something of that nature. Maybe it's the width of the engine compared to a parallel twin?

My ex had a baby Ninja and it was very easy to throw around. Great learner bike and great for beating on down a twisty road. Once I replaced the wet noodles that came in the forks with real springs, I used to ride that much more than the sport bikes I had at the time. You could ride the crap out of it and not be going hyper legal speeds. The CBRs couldn't even get out of first before breaking most every speed limit.

Likewise. I guess I should skip adding a 350 to the stable. ;D

no kidding fix!  my 7r doesn't kick in until 4 grand... by that time, in 1st gear i'm already doing 25-30mph skipping entirely the first 25 mph.  ;D  and, that's just to get it moving!  2nd gear can pull you up over any speed limit.  i really love those last four  ;D

when i was speaking of easy vs. more difficult... vintage bikes sometimes don't always idle like you want them to.  sometimes they don't STOP like you want them to (mine does though).   an old vintage bike that is hotter than hell can be a trick to keep running at a stop light or even worse, coming up to the stop light while pulling in the clutch and brakes at the same time.  my usual is pull the revs down w/ both brakes to a rear brake only speed, pull the clutch, let off the front brake and give it a bit of gas to idle where i want it.
i hope when i'm done giving it another tuneup for the season... that problem will be cured.  especially, now that i have a carb synch!   ;D

:P  i can't help it if my body won't let me eat breakfast!  no really, that's what i attribute it to... i'm active but most of all, getting up everyday around 7 or 8 and not eating until at least noon!  i get stomach aches and don't feel well if i eat before the stomach wakes up.
like today... 1:14pm and not even hungry.

2 cups of coffee and one beer... hey man, tomorrow is pat's day.   ;D

Nice job, Fix.  The more you ride it, the more you'll like.
Enjoy,
