Ok my CB750K2 was built ground up last year - work in progress...though it does run great now....this weekend was all about polishing my spare tank....

Here is how it looked in `99 when I bought it....

It was very functional after I changed the seat....the girls loved it

But then a final gear bearing blew and engine rebuild bottom end...post rebuild...

Tomesseli bars....

Got some clear signals (Yamiya) for front and back..

New rubber....Bridgetones BT45s

Chrome headlight bucket (DSS)...

Polished covers from Ebay and HM341s from a K6:

And finally finished.....

So that was last year.

This weekend....I took my spare tank/sidecovers.....done "tasetfully" in Scotland colours...

stripped the paint and went for the polished bare look (thanks to Gregmoto for the inspiration on this one and Ill be using the POR15 soon - thanks!)

Now what to do about the sidecovers (this orange one is staying as is, but I have 2 spares....should I paint black? Or silver? Or? Any suggestions?

I recognise the tank isnt "perfect" but thats ok with me...I just need the HONDA badges (will paint black) and then should be good to go....

Love that bike, especially the seat! I would paint the side covers black with some silver pin stripping. Black to match the seat and the exhaust shield inserts. Mean sound!

I would paint the sidecovers either goss or flat black.
No need to draw more attention to them then u have too...

Looks good.

With all the chrome and polished stuff go with black or flat/satin black, with silver pin stripes.

Both Silver and/or Black would be good but I agree with Bg, Paint them black and do some Silver pinstripes.

Thanks guys for all the comments about the sidecovers - very helpful! I like the idea of black with silver pinstripes so I think Im going to try this....now here is the question....HOW do I do pinstripes!? Whats the procedure for masking etc...I am pretty clueless at painting and this will be a rattle can attempt...any pointers much appreciated.

Sweet deal. You think the previous owner of that tank was Scottish or something?

Love the seat especially, and love the fact that you're able to keep the rear fender intact without having to trim the fender or any other metal work. I'm dying to know where you got this from, as I'm planning to pull off a similar look on my own project. (Hey, you know what they say about imitation...right?

The Scottish tank/sidecovers was my previous attempt at being creative

I put it on the bike once and decided it just didnt go.....Im liking the polished look much more...going for that industrial/minimalist look.

The seat is a Guilari copy (German make instead of Italian) -I got it from German Ebay for $120. One went for 80 euros last week - same model!! There is also a fellow German SOHC member who is selling the padding to make your own...he also has the seat casts as well.....

I know some people dont like the stock light/fender but I do

so I was happy to keep it. Also it was pretty good condition so didnt really want to cut it up. Had it been otherwise I may have changed it.

Looks good Andy.. I will also vote for the black/silver combo... I have some pinstriping tape you can use.. Basically you whack the covers with silver(or whatever the stripe color you want) then you run your pinstriping(make sure to have a steady hand!! ) Then whack it with some coats of your black. peel off your tape do a light sand to take the edges off. and whack it with your choice of clear.... WOOHOO...

Some feedback regarding my rear shocks given the amount of questions Ive asked about rear suspension lately (thanks to Art/Sparty for being such a great teacher!).

I had always wanted to raise the rear end of the K2 to give it a higher profile at the back. I even got some CB1000 shocks (with reservoir) to go on the back but the reservoir interfered with the 4-4 exhaust so they were sold to a Forum member. Ok so I have a set of "V-H-T" CB900 (1982) shocks on the back now and ran them last year and they are stiff but work best on 2nd from last setting (quite stiff) - bike handled well both in straight line at speed and in corners - especially in corners!

This past weekend, had the g/f on the back and increased to last setting - so very stiff. This raised the back up and shocks did their thing with 2-up and bike handled fine. I didnt decrease the stiffness and with only me on the bike I rode to Boston SOCHC beer night. The springs were too stiff - bike was all over the place, light twitchy front end, back felt as though it was jumping up and down, didnt feel stable at all!! As I was riding I was thinking of Sparty (Art) and Hondamans words on suspension - as always so right. This morning turned shocks down a notch back to second setting...aaaah sooooo much better! These are maybe not the worlds best shocks but they will do for now - here is a pic of them on the bike:

Ive always run stock shocks (stock height) so am posting this for others in case you were thinking of buying some stiffer longer shocks....it may adversely effect your handling!

The other side has a matte black side cover with the original badging, I dont have a decent pic of the other side though...

is there much difference between the 750 seat pan and the 550 seat pan? Just wondering if one of those foam kits wouldnt work to build a replica seat for a 550.

Shocks comment:

I scored a hell of a deal on a pair of Progressive rear shocks for an early CB900F. They are an inch longer than sock and the fit pretty good. The lower fork is about 1/8" wider than a stock CB750 so I had to use a washer for a spacer. And the eyelet is a bit narrower, also a washer for a spacer. Also, the centerstand is too short now to get the rear tire off of the ground. I do notice now that the handling is a bit off. The front end seems a little more loose on the highway than it was before. Other than those few querks, I love the ride height and stance. I do however hate the fact that they don't come in chrome anymore.

Sounds very similar to my experience pddpimp about the front end handling. It felt too loose for my liking...very twitchy especially on corners. Im much happier with a more stable front end especially on the corners.

how 'bout a darker silver and then take a scotch brite to it after you're done....still will add a bit of contrast
to the frame / tank etc. great looking bike either way...

I definitely agree with those who said black sidecovers. There is, as far as I can tell, zero ways to make plastic sidecovers match a bare metal tank. Painted silver won't match, so it'll look like a mistake... IMO.

But, also IMO, I vote for putting the orange bits back on. The color really sets the bike off from everyone else's silver and black bikes. And this coming from a guy who loves silver and black bikes. I like what you have going on with the stripped tank, I just dig the orange more.

Ill be keeping the orange on the side and will change as mood dictates. Im lucky having a spare tank/sidecovers. The bare metal tank idea was one Ive always wanted to try as to me it really evokes the backyard, no-nonsense, simplistic style of the 50s/60s cafe bikes and will give this bike a sort of industrial look...well at least thats the idea.

I also agree about the silver sidecovers and so will be going for black (aka triton-style) with the little honda diamonds still there to fill the huge empty space. Honda tank badges will also be going back on. With the help of Frank - fellow local forum member Ill be doing this next week - clearcoat tank with POR15 Glisten PC (thanks to Gregorymoto for this tip) and paint covers - so Ill post new pics when I finish.

Went for matt black sidecovers. Tank has now been clearcoated with por-15 glisten PC and thanks to Frank (750K2) for helping me with this!
